NECRODEATH interview 2006

When you’ll be reading those words, the new album of NECRODEATH will be out and reviewed in these pages. “100% Hell”, the last CD of Italian black/thrash veterans, was strongly awaited…at least by me! Since “Mater of all Evil” I was expecting a more skullfucking album that never occurred with the following releases. I couldn’t wait anymore so I contacted Peso and John to calm down my addiction of necro/black/thrash metal and know more about the next release.

1-Hello, how are you? NECRODEATH is going to release its new album in mid April, what can we expect from your 6th aggression?
PESO: Well, our next upcoming album will be called "100% Hell" and will be out in Europe on 17 April...In France will be distributed by Season of mist, and you can be sure that the new release will blow away your head!

2-My favourite album of NECRODEATH is “Mater of all evil”, the album of your reformation; each song on this album is awesome, the sound is good, the atmosphere is absolutely demoniac and vocals are so aggressive. I didn’t feel so impressed by the following albums (which contains good songs for sure!).”Mater of all evil” is your best album so far; how this next release “100% hell” can dethrone this masterpiece?
PESO: If you like Mater I think you have to love" Black as pitch" as well, cause we have work on the same frequency if you know what I mean...I can understand "Ton(e)s of hate is pretty particular and in same way very experimental for a band like us...Well "100% Hell" I think is a mix of all our steps, but in this one I think the way of composition is more mature, and we have try to mix in our best way the violence with the melody...so at last I can tell that this is just another different NECRODEATH album, where anyway you can recognise the necro trademark!

3-Claudio left NECRODEATH for personal reasons. Was it a lack of interest in the music? Will it affect the song writing? I ask this because you have a particular riffs approach? Can you introduce us to your new guitar player?
PESO: When Claudio left the band I take care about the composition of the songs and we have recruited a guitar turnist with us called Andy that has recorded the guitar work in the album....Actually for the live shows that we have to start in April we’ll have on lead guitar, Pier from LABYRINTH, a great Italian heavy metal band..... Anyway for me ,also if I play drums, was not a new compose a necro song, cause since the beginning from demos time I’ve always written songs together with Claudio, and in the last years too Claudio leave me the "space" for my ideas....

4-This new album will feature a special guest appearance with Cronos from the mighty VENOM. How does this happen? Is he a NECRODEATH fan?
PESO: We always has been great fans of VENOM, and by the way we were already in touch with Cronos, cause he knows our releases and he too appreciate our music...anyway with the help of mister Bosio this time we have asked to Cronos if he wanted make an intro for our new album, and he agreed....For us it has been a really great satisfaction and honour to have the father of all extreme music in our “100% Hell”!!!!!

5-Will this new album be released through Scarlet records? Can you talk about your relations with this label? I think you are among their biggest sales, am I right? Never been contacted by bigger label such as Nuclear Blast, Century Media…?
PESO: We are in touch in true friendly way with them and we have a very good deal....Anyway we like be free persons and free artists and with Scarlet this is possible....at last I don’t think that we could be able to sign a deal like 7 CD in 7 years or stuff like that....At last if we will receive a big offer from somebody we will easily speak with Scarlet and see what is the best for everybody.... If we should sign for a bigger label of course Scarlet too should sell more of our catalogue....

6-NECRODEATH played numerous gigs and festivals in Italy, but did you have any proposals for the rest of Europe? Will you kick our bastard arses one day in France? HellFest is going to take place in France at the end of June if you’re looking for gigs!
JOHN: In May we'll tour Europe together with MARDUK and we'll be in France as well! Please take a look to http://www.necrodeath.net/ for further details. However, in the past we had several proposals for touring Europe or for playing concerts in other countries, but those weren't good proposals.

7-Let’s talk about the compilation “20 years of noise”. Who made the choice of track listing? The good point is that we can find your first demo “the shining pentagram” on it, but concerning the choice of your best songs I am a bit disappointed, where are the killer songs of “Mater of all evil” (the creature, serpent, flame of malignance…). It shows a more accessible side of NECRODEATH I think.
PESO: Believe me it is not so easy to choose among about 80 songs written in 20 years....of course everybody will be happy and disappointed at the same time.... we have try to choose about our taste....for example I don’t like Serpent anymore, but I love Thanatoid (NdJ: On “Fragments of Insanity”), but at last you can’t find any of this two songs... Anyway for us has been great print this compilation cause means that after 20 years we are still good to make noise!! ehehe die hard!!!!!!!!!!!

8-On the “Ton(e)s of hate” CD, you’ve got an incredibly powerful bass sound? Will this characteristic remain on the new album? What equipment are you using actually (bass, amp, effects…)?
JOHN: In "Ton(e)s of Hate" I used the same sound I use live, while in the previous albums the producer didn't agree. And in "100% Hell" I could use my live sound as well. I'm currently using a Bass POD Pro for modelling and distorting the sound, an Alesis 3630 to compress, a Rocktron Velocity 400 power amplifier ad a SWR Triad I cabinet.

9-NECRODEATH has always been into diabolical themes, evil, death… Have you ever had troubles with religious groups in the past trying to cancel your gigs? Similar things happened to IMPALED NAZARENE for example.
PESO: I think we have a different way of explain our ideas or evil nature of disgust.... For example in "Church Black Book", we speak about the slaughters of catholics during the centuries..... This is history right? Anyway our “100% Hell”, except the last song that is the title track that is a travel to hell inspired by the "inferno" of Divina Commedia, speaks about the typical news we read and see everyday...and this is the real hell if you know what I mean.....

10-John, you’ve been part of NECRODEATH since the reformation; how were you recruited by Claudio & Peso? Did you know the band before? What is your favourite NECRODEATH album?
JOHN: I was used to play together with Peso in minor local bands and we were friends since the early 90s. When NECRODEATH formed back and Paolo (ex bass player) didn't want to join the band Peso asked me to substitute him. And now I'm here! ;)

11-How did you become a metal maniac? What was the first album that you bought and the first gig you went to? What are the latest releases you are listening to?
PESO:I was 12years old and I buy a KISS album called "Unmasked"....then I started to listen AC-DC and IRON MAIDEN....but some years later I need some more aggressive...So I was impressed by VENOM and soon METALLICA and SLAYER.... After saw VENOM live in Milan the day 5 Feb 1984 Claudio and I decided to put together a noise band...so we started call the project GHOSTRIDER, but after one year we changed the name in NECRODEATH!!

12-How do you see the evolution of cult acts such as SLAYER or SEPULTURA who changed a lot since their beginnings? Still fan of them and their latest releases?
PESO: About SEPULTURA to be honest I’m a fan of the old stuff...the “Schizophrenia” vinyl is an absolute must! I’ve finish to follow the band after the split with Max.... About SLAYER I don’t think they have change so much compared the beginning, also if I must admit as a big SLAYER fan as I am, that another album as "Reign in blood" well never be heard again.......

13-John, you are also a member of RAZA DE ODIO, CADAVERIA and DYNABYTE. Hell, how do you manage to lead all these projects? Do you have a job? Can you give us little information about each band?
JOHN: I'm not a professional musician and I have an ordinary job like any mortal... moreover, for more precision, I don't "lead" these bands as I'm just the bass player and I take part of the composition only in DYNABYTE songs, while in other bands I just play and take care of minor things like web sites and merchandise etc... Well, RAZA DE ODIO are currently composing new songs http://www.razadeodio.com/, CADAVERIA are recording their 3rd album (in this band I'm also the producer) http://www.cadaveria.com/ and DYNABYTE are preparing few live acts for the next weeks http://www.dynabyte.it/

14-What are your future plans? You have released a VHS “From hate to scorn” about the reformation. What about the idea of a DVD gathering your history, clips and gigs?
JOHN: It's a nice idea but don't forget that we are an underground band and we are low budget. Producing a DVD is very expensive... unfortunately...

15-Do you care about the Italian scene? Do you know NATRON, HOUR OF PENANCE, SADIST, FORGOTTEN TOMB, SACRADIS…? Do you have any bands to recommend to the readers?
PESO: Yes! First of all I wanna recommend you the return of the great SCHIZO! They are recording the album of their come back to their roots....I can’t wait.... then about the new revelations here in Italy you have to remember these names: LEGION, AMETHISTA, METHEDRAS, CRUENTUS and SHINING FEAR!! All of these are very special great new acts!! Check it!!!

ABANTESMA interview 2006

South America relentlessly unleashes hordes of death and black metal bands dedicated to the underground. Their hard way of life makes them produce raw and honest extreme metal. ABANTESMA is one of them which recently released a 2nd demo of sick metal of death, nothing innovative but deadly enough to skullcrush some posers, he!he! Here is a chat I had with skin beater Carlos.

-Blasphemous hails Carlos! Please introduce the ABANTESMA entity. Tell me how everything happened, why you created ABANTESMA and what’s the meaning of ABANTESMA?

Carlos Polleze: Hell-lo Jim, first of all, thanx a bunch for your support. So, ABANTESMA was created to express our felling about this dying world. We choose to play Death metal because we love this kind of music. ABANTESMA is an old Portuguese word, it means ghosts, spirits of repugnant appearance, when a person see it, that person fells repulsion.

-You play brutal and fast death metal in early KRISIUN vein but you definitively don’t limit yourself in full non stop blast beats shit, you have some pretty good catchy parts. I would underline one song from your demo (Vanquish) in which you slow down some parts and use some riffs that really create dark feelings. It reminds me some SADISTIC INTENT and old MORBID ANGEL stuff. Do you agree with this statement? Which bands are praised by ABANTESMA?

Carlos: Yeah! MORBID ANGEL is a big influence, especially to Fernando ( guitars and vocals ). About the SADISTIC INTENT, man! That band is very nice, they rules too. I can say another bands that we like, for example: SARCÓFAGO, CORPSE GRINDER, DEICIDE…another thing about the Vanquish song, it is my favourite song, I’m glad for your underline and comment. Thanks guy.

-We can witness that death metal dominates mostly the brazilian underground scene since the explosion of KRISIUN. Do you have any interest in that band? What are the most respected bands in your country?

Carlos: Look! The bands here in Brazil know how to do extreme music, its natural since the 80’s, bands like SARCÓFAGO, VULCANO ….were the firsts here. Talking about the Death Metal after the KRISIUN explosion, I think it’s normal we see a lot of bands trying to be a new KRISIUN, but it’s not good, it’s terrible, this kind of situation happened on the past too, with the SEPULTURA. KRISIUN is a great band, I have some cds in my house. Brazil have showed very nice bands to the underground word, I can say some names, like: CORPSE GRINDER, MENTAL HORROR, IxSxOxYxF, VULTOS VOCÍFEROS…

-“The Plague against them all” was recorded in late 2005. What is the differences between this demo and the previous “Gods, Hate, War” from 2004. This last one seems to spread your name successfully in Brazil, am I right? Why there was some delay about your “Gods, Hate, War” as stated in your bio? Was it line-up troubles?

Carlos: I think the great difference between the first demo and “The Plague…”are the songs constructions. We are playing more, we are using new times in the music, new techniques.
Yeah man, we had some problems in the line-up, nothing serious, only bass players.

-Do you start your promotion outside Brazil with this second demo? What is the feedback regarding ABANTESMA so far? Any bad review saying it’s not original or something else? What are the fucking trends infesting Brazil musically (nu metal or electro metal…)?

Carlos: No, all reviews that I’ve read are always saying good things. Since the first demo I have been in touch with another countries, but when we released “The plague…” my list of contacts around the necrounderground world increased and I begun to spread “The plague…” outside of Brazil firstly, because I had some trades to be doing overseas and when “The plague against them” was released I was sending for it persons, fanzines. About the fuckin’ trends… here in Brazil the most popular style now is the Emo (do you know? NdJ: Yeah, better call it homo, ahahah!). Nu metal is another bullshit that infested some heads, it’s sad but it’s true.

-Gilberto Gil is minister concerning music and everything about culture. I don’t think he loves death metal ah! ah! Does this guy help people doing music more widely? Does it give more importance to all musical movements?

Carlos: (Laughts) I think he doesn’t like. Well, his work here is with another kind of situation. I see some things about his work actually like minister on TV, he is a popular person of Brazilian culture and he made his carrier playing and releasing MPB discs…his life doesn’t have nothing with metal music, and he doesn’t have link with extreme music, actually, I think it’s good…because if he would like mind in this…he’ll do bullshit, because he doesn’t know the real meaning/proposal of this kind of art, or of the artists of metal music.

-It seems a full length album is on the way and I guess you are looking for a label. How have been your investigations so far? Did you get interesting contacts? Does this new release contain songs from the demos or is it new material?

Carlos: Well, we are writing and rehearsing the new songs, we’ll put those four tracks of “The plague against them” in our future full disc…I have some interesting contacts overseas, but to release a disc isn’t so easy, I am working hard for it…as in Brazil as overseas. Only time will tell.

-Do you have any contacts with the neighbour countries of Brazil? Peru, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia… Any interesting bands to mention? Is there support within each others?

Carlos: Sure, I do. I have been in contact with Peru, Chile, Bolivia…I will take a demo from a Peruvian band called GORE. I have a Black metal band from Bolivia, called BENDESAR. I have here in my house a demo from a Peruvian band called RITUAL too.

-Carlos, you are playing drums in ABANTESMA, which drummers would you name as references? When did you start playing drums? What is your actual drums material?

Carlos: Give me to think…. I begun to play drums because of Dave Lombardo, and them, I knew Mike Smith from SUFFOCATION, Tony Laureano. But I like to see other drummers playing for example, Neil Peart, Mitch Harris. When I bought my own drums I had 18 years old, but I begun to drill my motive coordination since my 14 years, always playing air drums listening some discs ( haha, its true man), or doing blasting beats exercises on the arm of the sofa. Here in Brazil the musicians have a natural feeling to play the songs, we have our own style. We have a natural groove running inside our veins, and then, after I’ve bought my kit, was only to make some thinks, rhythm, that I learned on action. Now I have an Odery Drum and different brands of cymbals and a double pedal from Mapex and my first pedal too called Turbo.

-In the promo pack you sent to me, you add some flyers of past gigs. You play two times at Metal Devastation Fest. You play with the mighty MYSTIFIER and many local bands? How were those gigs? Usually how many people came at gigs? Are you supported by local metalheads?

Carlos: It was nice. MYSTIFIER is a legend of black/death metal music, was a pleasure to play with them. The gigs were very nice, I don’t remember how many metal heads came at... but in general , here in my state the number of people in shows are, at about 300/400 metalheads today. Yes, we are supported, we are the first brutal death metal band from here, my state. The real persons are always giving a support to the band.

-You also send me flyers of a brazilian zine called Metal Discharge? Are there any cool zines in Brazil? I guess you like that kind of zines but what do you think of webzines? Don’t you think that some of them play the game of labels who releases so much stuff, that all those webzines would make you think everything is great? Don’t you think they are a bit responsible of musical saturation?

Carlos: Yes, there are. We have a lot of nice fanzines here. Saying about the webzines, I like too, but my favourites forever will be the fanzines. Some webzines are nice, I send stuffs for it too, but the majority of my packages are sending to the zines. I don’t know if all the webs play the game of labels, I can’t generalize. Here in Brazil, we have some mags, for example, unhappy it have been payed to say nice things about some bands, and when you listen the cd, man! That’s sucks…that’s ok, the real fans of underground music aren’t idiots, they know the truth. This kind of situation you said, about webs, or zines, or mags, be playing the games of labels…is only to get some empty heads, not the maniacs of the underworld like you, me …or other real bangers spreaded around this fuckin world.

-Your hometown is Serra in Espírito Santo (South East Brazil). How is life there and in Vitória? You seem to have an important scene? Can you tell us few words about CATACUMBA, DELICTA CARNIS, WOLFSHADE, WARDEATH, EVICTUS and AWAIT ROTTENESS?

Carlos: These bands above are from my state, they play in a festival with us here some months ago. The scene here in my state is growing. Some years ago we had nice and important bands, and now we have a new generation keeping the flames of Espiríto Santo alive. When ABANTESMA released the first demo, some reviews in Brazil said that, finally, after many years a surprise came from ES (my state). About the life here, well, is nice, we have beautiful girls, beaches, but…the violence is present too, off course, the misery, in general man here is very nice to live, I can assure it for you, but I can’t close my eyes to the misery in my country, children working or living on the streets. It is a sad reality, unhappy.

-In your credits, we can read you thank killer bands like CORPSEGRINDER and HEADHUNTER DC. Are they still active? And what can you say about MESEMON ECROF and FUNERATUS and their music style?

Carlos: Yeah! CORPSE GRINDER is alive, they are from MG, another state near mine, I love this band, and about the HEADHUNTER, they are recording a new stuff. Well...the MESEMON ECROF is another nice Death Metal band from my country and FUNERATUS too.

-What are the latest releases that desecrated you soul? Which bands will you forever worship as they made of you a metalhead? And which ones make you vomit?

Carlos: Celebration of Hate from CORPSE GRINDER was a good release. The band that rules in my mind and made me a metalhead, was SARCÓFAGO, I’ll praise forever their releases, they are the kings of extreme music, the pioneers of brutality. I hate all that bullshit bands of Glam, hard rock, nu metal…they make me not only to vomit, but to shit a lot too.

-How is it being a metalhead in Brazil? Are you like an alien among common people? Do you have any troubles with bastards, religious cunts or authorities?

Carlos: Is normal. When I started to listen Metal, I remember my friends saying to me: “ Guy, its not music, it’s noise, that singers are screaming as a crazy idiots..” but… fuck off them, I am here. I don’t have any kind of trouble with authorities, or a “blind” fanatic.

-Can you say some brazilian words I would tell to my worst enemies?

Carlos: Write it there man:

2- Foda-se!
I am always saying it here, especially “Foda-se” that means like: Fuck off.

WITHDRAWN interview 2006 (in French)

Jeune groupe des alentours de Bordeaux, WITHDRAWN m’a bien scotché lors de son passage à Angoulême avec une prestation énergique et bien puissante. Le combo pratiquant un death/black mélodique et résolument moderne doit prochainement sortir une seconde démo encore plus brutale ! Entretien avec Chris.

-Salut Chris ! J’ai bien l’impression que la 1ère interview de WITHDRAWN est en train de se faire sur un pauvre zine papier, ahahah ! Prêt à nous parler du parcours de ton groupe ? Je crois qu’une petite présentation s’impose.
Salut Jim et déjà un grand merci pour l'interview et le temps que tu nous accordes ! WITHDRAWN est né des cendres de DAWN CHAOS que mon frère Julien et moi-même avions formés. Après de longues recherches pour un batteur qui se sont avérées veines, Julien a laissé la guitare de côté ( il est guitariste à l' origine ) et a pris place derrière les fûts car il voulait savoir joué de la batterie et plutôt que de chercher un batteur, autant le devenir soi même. Moi je suis resté à mon poste de bassiste-chanteur et après presque 3 années de recherches, petites annonces et plans galères on a trouvé Ben pour le poste de guitariste ! Le plus drôle est qu' il habite à quelques kilomètres de chez nous. Pourquoi nous prenions nous la tête à aller chercher si loin ha ha ? Pour le style musical, sache qu' à l' origine Julien et moi étions influencés par des groupes presque " opposés " mais lorsque l' on a vu le clip de " Pinball Map " d' In Flames on s' est parfaitement accordés car c' est ce mélange de vitesse et de lourdeur, de mélodie et d' agressivité que l' on cherchait à obtenir depuis longtemps ! J' ai appris depuis lors que ce clip a eu le même effet sur Ben !

-OK, comme je t’ai expliqué par mail, j’ai découvert WITHDRAWN lors de votre concert à Angoulême avec HELLMOUTH et ASMODEE. Vous avez mis une bonne claque au public ce soir-là. Content de votre concert ? Comment avez-vous été amené à jouez au Mars Attack pourtant pas réputé pour y faire jouer des groupes comme WITHDRAWN ?
Très contents de notre concert ! Malgré le manque quasi total de pub à Angoulême un peu plus de 90 metaleux survoltés ont répondu présents et ont été réceptifs. C' était la première fois qu' un public montrait autant d' engouement et on s' est donné à fond pour lui rendre la pareille ! C' était un peu le jeu de " le premier qui finit raide mort de fatigue a perdu ! "
Concernant le Mars Attack, j' avais cru comprendre , à force de consulter des dates de concert un peu partout sur le net, que cette salle faisait pas mal de punk rock et un peu de métal et surtout qu' elle permettait à de jeunes groupes d' y jouer. Donc entre le télephone et les e-mails j' ai réussi à joindre Nico de l' asso Transgreen et on s' est mis ok pour cette date au moins 2 mois avant qu' elle n' ait lieu. On remercie encore Nico et le Mars Attack au passage pour cette soirée vraiment excellente !

-Je suis assez surpris par le contraste entre votre prestation, que j’ai trouvée bien brutale, et la démo « This is not therapy » qui est très mélodique voire expérimentale par moment. Je dois dire que les influences mélodiques ne sont pas ce que je préfère chez WITHDRAWN. A quoi peut on s’attendre pour la 2ème démo ?
Merci pour le compliment sur la prestation live mais sache qu' on essaye à chaque fois d' être plus charismatiques, plus brutaux pour égaler et même dès qu' on en sera réellement capable dépasser des monstres de scène tels que Behemoth, Hate Eternal, Suffocation ou Dying Fetus !
J' espère que la prochaine démo va répondre à tes attentes car les influences death brutal vont se faire plus ressentir. On avait enregistré la première démo " This is not therapy " alors qu' on n' écoutait presque pas de death brutal et qu' on se limitait même à ne pas mettre de riffs brutaux. Mais on laisse place à l' agressivité maintenant. Par consèquence, il y aura un peu moins de mélodies mais du coup elles ne vont que mieux ressortir dans cette marée violente. On a appuyé un peu plus notre côté black métal dans certains riffs ou certaines ambiances et on a épuré quelque peu l' aspect progressif de nos premières compos. Il y aura un peu moins de riffs mais on les retiendra plus facilement. En revanche les structures seront toujours quelque peu alambiquées, mais rien d' inhumain cependant ! Enfin le son sera toujours " home made " mais on a acheté pas mal de matos et on a gagné en expérience et je peux te dire qu' après avoir vu les premiers essais, cette deuxième démo va enterrer sans aucun problème la précédente.

-Ceci dit vos qualités musicales ne sont pas à remettre en questions puisque ça joue bien dans WITHDRAWN, mais je dois dire que, putain, Julien (batterie), excuse moi du peu, il blaste comme un enfoiré ! Si on peut vous reprocher le côté trop mélodique dans votre musique, les parties de batterie en imposent, créant un certain équilibre. Depuis combien d’année fait il de la batterie ? Depuis combien de temps pratiquez vous vos instruments dans le groupe ?
Julien fait de la batterie depuis 3 ans et 1 ou 2 mois pour être à peu près précis. La priorité pour lui était de savoir blaster, envoyer de la double pédale et taper des rythmes trashs style " tou ca tou ca " pour pouvoir enfin avoir un batteur dit " extrême " dans un groupe extrême, et pas une espèce de branleur qui se croit une bête quand il fait deux accoups de double axe à la Meshuggah. Personellement je fais de la basse depuis approximativement 5 ans et Ben de la guitare depuis un petit nombre d' années mais je ne sais pas exactement. Je dirai 6 ou 7 ans peut être mais c' est sans doute un peu moins.

-En fouinant sur internet j’ai vu que Julien jouait également dans ANNTHENNATH et DISKARIAL. Parle moi de ces deux projets et de leur actualité.
DISKARIAL est le projet solo de Julien orienté véritablement plus black métal brutal et mélodique à la croisée entre Behemoth et Immortal dans lequel il compose et enregistre tout lui même ! Pour les concerts, je prend la place de bassiste et Vincent Roubière ( Asmodée / Offending ) la place du batteur. Un promo 3 titres est bientôt fini et il va servir à démarcher les labels. Pour ANNTHENNATH, c' est en fait Raphaël, la tête pensante du groupe, qui lui a proposé de participer à ce projet en enregistrant d' abord ses parties de batterie pour que lui crée ensuite toutes les autres parties par dessus. Les titres étant assez longs, un promo 2 titres devrait voir le jour bientôt pour un label Brésilien.

-J’ai noté également que tu es très à l’aise sur scène et très communicatif. Pourtant WITHDRAWN n’a pas énormément de concerts à son actif. As-tu joué dans d’autres groupes avant WITHDRAWN ?
En fait, il s' agissait du 9ème concert de WITHDRAWN et je n' ai fait qu' un concert au poste de bassiste-chanteur avant et c' était avec DAWN CHAOS puisque le groupe a splitté après cet unique concert. J' ai aussi fait 2 concerts avec un groupe de potes dans lequel on fait des reprises pour déconner. Personnellement, j' ai horreur de ces concerts où il ne se passe rien entre le groupe et son public si ce n' est un mur froid que certains attribuent au professionnalisme des musiciens ou je ne sais quoi. Foutaises ! Un concert c' est un échange entre un groupe et un public et c' est à moi de motiver les gens pour qu' ils se lâchent et qu' ils se rendent bien compte qu' on n' est pas là pour faire dans la dentelle. Si ça peut t' aider à te situer, sache qu' un " monsieur " comme David Vincent est un très bon frontman pour moi. En plus il paraît qu' il est pas plus grand que moi d' après ce que m' ont dit des potes donc ça me fait au moins un point commun avec ce géant ha ha !

-Tu décris le style de WITHDRAWN comme étant du black/death mélodique. Quelles influences citerais tu ? Ont-elles évoluées par rapport aux débuts du groupe ?
Indéniablement, la scène death mdélodique scandinave est notre base commune à tous trois. Sur la première démo tu peux sentir une influence black métal qu' on tient de Cradle of filth, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal et même Behemoth ! On est aussi très fans de Death et Carcass ! A l' heure actuelle, nous nous sommes beaucoup plus ouverts à des groupes brutaux comme Morbid Angel, Vader, Nile, Dying Fetus, Psycroptic ou encore SYL mais aussi à toute une scène black que nous ne connaissions presque que de nom et dans laquelle on retrouve Emperor, Satyricon, 1349 et Mayhem. Sinon, personnellement, j' ai appris à bien réécouter mes Fear Factory, Machine Head et autres Coroner et Sepultura.

-Généralement, quand on parle de black/death métal, on pense souvent à l’attirail corpsepaints, clous, croix renversées et tout le bordel. WITHDRAWN est loin du cliché. Vous a-t-on déjà fait des reproches sur votre look en fonction de votre style musical ? Certains métalleux sont très étroits d’esprit, si tu vois ce que je veux dire ! WITHDRAWN est très différent de ARKHON INFAUSTUS par exemple.
On n' a pas eu spécialement de remarques concernant notre look. On essaie juste de s' habiller sobrement et on se corrige nous même si besoin est. Les gars d' Otargos nous taquinent parfois en nous rappelant que le grim ça fait encore plus brutal sur scène mais ça concerne plus DISKARIAL que WITHDRAWN. De toute façon nous ne sommes pas des brutes épaisses velues et tatouées mais chaque fois que nous avons joué personne n' est venu nous dire qu' on jouait de la pop et c' est bien là l' essentiel. En ce qui concerne le grim et les cloux c' est vraiment une affaire de choix que je respecte.

-On pourrait traduire WITHDRAWN par « renfermé » ou « replié sur soi ». Quelle en est la signification pour toi ? Vos titres de chansons sont également étranges et loin des clichés à la « Raped, killed, raped again and put into pieces » ou bien « Burning churches for breakfast in the name of Satan ». Sérieusement, quels sont les thèmes abordés par WITHDRAWN ?
" Replié sur soi " est l' exacte signification que j' avais pour ce nom de groupe. Cela vient du fait que pendant longtemps mon frère et moi avons été isolés de beaucoup de choses et ce à cause de notre recherche sans résultat de musiciens. J' avais fini par penser qu' il n' y avait que nous 2 et cette envie de faire de la musique qui existaient dans mon microcosme, comme si tout nous avait rejeté. Ce nom est pour se souvenir que l' on en a un peu bavé pendant 3 ans avant de pouvoir monter un truc qui tienne enfin la route. Par ailleurs, j' ai appris par des anglais que WITHDRAWN s' employait aussi pour dire l' abstinence sexuelle mais ce n' est pas ce sens là qu' il faut voir dans notre nom ha ha.
Un des principaux thèmes abordés dans mes textes et la quête de soi quitte à renoncer au monde et à ce que l' on pense être la vie. Quand tu vas au delà des apparences et quand tu comprends que tu n' as pour limites que celles que tu veux bien t' accorder alors tu comprends que tu peux grandir et t' améliorer à l' infini. On peut trouver un côté un peu cynique, misanthropique et pessimiste à mes textes mais le vrai sens est toujours positif. Pour résumer, j' encourage les individualités à être elles mêmes et à être plus fortes !

-Y a-t-il des sujets que tu voudrais éviter à tous prix dans WITHDRAWN ? (Satanisme, politique, écologie…) Que penses tu des groupes très extrêmes dans leurs propos (ANTAEUS, DEICIDE, NUNSLAUGHTER…) ou à l’inverse qui tournent tout en dérision (GRONIBARD, ULTRA VOMIT, CESSPIT…) ?
Exit les histoires d' amour et les lamentations plus ou moins réelles. Mes premiers textes traitaient surtout de la douleur que je resentais mais en grandissant et en me rementant en question j' ai eu l' impression que c' était faux et que j' avais tellement lu de paroles qui parlaient de cela qu' inconsciemment je m' étais convaincu que la vie était minable. Donc je n' écrirai plus ce genre de choses. Je ne me vois pas parler de politique dans mes chansons, j' en parle à l' occasion dans ma vie privée mais je crois que ça ne mérite pas plus que ça d' en parler. Après, ce que dit un groupe comme Deicide ne me pose pas de problème, je pense que ça fera toujours moins de victimes que ce qu' ont pu faire toutes les religions réunies de toute façon. Là où je me sentirai géné c' est si des gens prenaient tout au pied de la lettre et allaient tuer le premier mec qui passe. Et encore, ça ne serait même pas le groupe qui serait à remettre en question mais bien plutôt celui ou celle qui aurait interprété les paroles de cette façon comme ça a pu être le cas dans l' affaire Columbine où l' on a accusé Manson. Par contre, j' aime l' humour et donc tout tourner en dérision me fait plutôt rire, je me souviens même avoir eu des crampes d' estomac et des larmes aux yeux en surfant sur le site de Cesspit !

-Vous venez des alentours de Bordeaux qui semble avoir une scène assez active (groupes, assos, zines, studios, etc…). Est-ce que WITHDRAWN a bonne réputation là-bas ? Avec quels groupes avez-vous des affinités et quels sont ceux méritant d’être supportés ?
Bordeaux a une scène effectivement active quoique pas très bien organisée ni très sérieuse et c' est dommage mais sinon WITHDRAWN s' est encore trop peu produit pour avoir une réputation, du moins une réputation qui serait revenue jusqu' à nos oreilles. Par contre, chaque fois que l' on joue quelque part des gens viennent nous voir en disant qu' ils ont aimé notre concert donc je pense qu' ils ont une assez bonne image de nous et j' espère que le bouche-à-oreille va un peu se faire. On a co-organisé un de nos derniers concerts avec Imply In All et ça nous a rapprochés, c' est des mecs sympas et motivés ! Breakdust sont excellents, musicalement comme humainement, je crois qu' on n' a jamais eu un aussi bon contact avec un groupe que l' on ne connaissait pas. On croise de temps en temps Otargos à un concert ou même dans le privé en ce qui concerne leur batteur et ils se prennent pas la tête en plus d' être déconneurs. Je ne peux finalement pas ommettre les fous d' Asmodée et d' Offending qui sont devenus de bons amis et qui proposent une musique vraiment incroyable !

-Quels sont vos projets pour la rentrée ? J’imagine que vous prévoyez quelques concerts ? Avec quels groupes aimerais-tu jouer ?
Une nouvelle démo 4 titres est en préparation dans laquelle figurera un titre que l' on joue déjà régulièrement en concert et on devrait jouer le 27 Octobre au Korigan à Luynes, le 28 Octobre au Lyon's Hall à Lyon avec Hysteria notamment et d' autres dates sont prévues par ci par là, notamment pour Mars 2007 déjà. Peut être quelque chose à Clermont courant rentrée également et une affiche éventuelle avec Imply In all au BCS à Poitiers mais c' est loin d' être sûr.
Sinon on essaie de booker une date à la Casamance où l' on aimerait jouer avec Lyzanxia mais c' est très incertain. J' espère pouvoir jouer avec In Flames et Morbid Angel un de ces jours mais je crois que je m' avance un peu là ha ha. Une date avec Scarve ou Aborted ou Gojira ne me déplairait pas mais je fais le difficile encore une fois.

-Bon, j’ai tendance à poser cette question à chaque interview (on ne se refait pas !), mais qu’écoutes tu en répondant à mes questions ? Tes derniers coups de cœur et tes déceptions ?
J' étais en train d' écouter le dernier SYL qui est passé comme une lettre à la poste, c' est à dire que j' ai strictement rien retenu et que je n' ai pas accroché du tout excepté une ou deux backing vocals bien puissantes, quelques plans sweeps originaux et le titre éponyme plutôt sympa. Je ne m' attendais pas à mieux de toute façon. Je n' écoute pas les trucs récents car c' est toujours nul. J' ai vraiment l' impression que les labels et les gens ne se contentent plus que d' une grosse prod pour faire d' un groupe un groupe soit disant excellent. Le dernier Disection ne m' a pas trop botté, par contre le Satyricon " Now, Diabolical " m' a paru cool. Dans les derniers trucs que j' ai écoutés " La muerte " de Gorefest était sympa et j' ai écouté un groupe japonais qui se nomme High And Mighty Color et y avait vraiment des bons trucs dedans.

-Comment vois tu l’évolution générale du métal extrême en France ? Quels groupes te semblent intéressants et porteurs de ce qui se jouera dans une dizaine d’années ?
Il y a en France de plus en plus de groupes mais par la même de plus en plus de mauvais groupes parmi lesquels il devient presque impossible de discerner ceux qui sont vraiment biens. Je trouve aussi très dommage que le métal extrême en France ne soit encore que deux genres de personnes : d' un côté ceux qui manquent de sérieux et qui ne sont intéréssés que par la picole et la fumette et à qui ils manquent le professionnalisme qui apporterait de vraies structures pour le métal, et de l' autre quelques uns qui essaient de se faire de la thune sur les groupes sans aucun état d' âme et qui ne donnent pas de chance aux groupes motivés. Quelques gens se bougent bien cependant mais il faudrait qu' ils soient plus nombreux et encouragés.
Sinon relativement peu de groupes me paraissent vraiment intéressants en France à part Asmodée, Lyzanxia, Scarve et Dark Poetry.

-En espérant qu’on boive quelques bières lors d’un prochain concert, je te remercie d’avoir répondu à mes questions et te souhaite, à toi et WITHDRAWN, une bonne continuation (plein de blasts de batterie !). A toi de conclure.

UNDERNEATH interview 2006

UNDERNEATH is a surprising death metal band from Portugal I discover through NH distro; their 2nd demo delivers quite good death metal and I would bet their next release would confirm a real potential.

1-Hola Garras, como vai? OK, I stop now 'cause my Portuguese language is very limited, sorry man! So can you dig deeply in the world of UNDERNEATH and talk about the band history, the members and your releases? Why choosing that name and why this attraction towards death metal and others bloody topics?

Aucun problème, mon français n'est pas celui bon ainsi…
Most important of all UNDERNEATH are a group of friends that like extreme music, beer that hopefully one day will get rich and famous thanks to all you guys. Eh eh eh!
Seriously, the band was born in Tomar, Portugal, in October 2001 originally formed by Sérgio Garraio, (vocals), Telmo Teixeira (guitar), Ricardo Ferreira (bass) and Ricardo Neto (drums). In October 2004 Miguel Fonseca joined the band, becoming the new singer and Sérgio Garraio the new guitar-player along with Telmo Teixeira.
We release our first cd, "Underneath", on 2002 and during the last year we released "By Flesh". Both CD's represents important stages of our history and evolution as band and as musicians. In one side we have "Underneath" that was recorded whit the old formation on an early stage of our existence, during that point where you are still searching for the right formula, and in the other is "By Flesh" that shows what we really want to do.
We choose UNDERNEATH because it represents the spirit of the band, our thoughts, our music, our feelings, us. In our point of view, it represents the place from where all things emerge and submerge.

2-Hard to point out what are the influences of UNDERNEATH. I would name, in no particular order, CANNIBAL CORPSE, AUTOPSY, DEMIGOD, early AT THE GATES, GORGUTS, etc… Your death metal style is very varied; can you comment UNDERNEATH musical approach?

It's hard to say because we all listen to different kinds of music. When we create a song we don't try to sound like this our that band our gender, we just play, it just happens naturally, it's what we like to play, loud and brutal.

3-There is a big step forward between your two demos: the sound as well as the composition. What were the mistakes you avoided in the demo 2005? Was it recorded in the same studio? Do you left vocals to concentrate on guitar because of the increasing difficulty of new songs?

The first CD was recorded in a local studio that didn't have a lot of experience in metal so when we decided to record "By Flesh" we choose to do it ourselves with the help of friend, it give us more time to do things our way.
We decided to include another guitar just to increase the brutality and strength of the songs as well to explore other methods of composition.

4-UNDERNEATH seems to slowly spread its name in the underground, what are your future plans? Do you get in touch with some labels?

We have a label that is interested on release our first album but we still have to wait for their decision, when it happen you will know. Meanwhile we are working whit several distros that are helping us here in Portugal, Australia, Canada, Holland and France. (Without your help, nothing of this would be possible, thank you all for the support). Future plans? Go out next weekend to see some concerts and drink beer, you are all invited. Seriously. We just want to keep doing what we like to do, play brutal music, meet cool people, play live and get rich. Eh eh.

5 -On your demo covers, we can distinguish a kind of mass of flesh, what is it exactly? One of your latest victim, ah, ah! What are the best death metal artworks ever according to you? Do you like guys like Jon Zig, Chris Moyen, Wes Benscotter, and Gabriel Byrne who did awesome artworks?

Ah, ah! It's the remains of George Bush!
The covers were based on paintings of Telmo Teixeira (the other guitar-player of the band) and the layout was created by Teresa Bento as well our site and the myspace page, she is helping us since the beginning.
We see them as our vision of what we all are, flesh, blood and mind. They are too many to say. I usually don't care a lot who as done this or that, the most important is that reflects the spirit of the songs.

6-I really like your title tracks, in a pure death metal tradition! Would you write things different from death, murder, decay, etc…as social matters or whatever? What is your definition of death metal? What do you think of today extreme metal mixing hardcore, samples, synth, or whatever stupid shit for being original at all costs? Are you into modern extreme metal?

No problem, in fact some of our songs are about social matters but from our point of view.
Death metal = Brutal music?! I really don't know, it's hard to say, it's something that you fell. I don't care a lot, but there are some shit out there that makes me sick. In the end only the strong survive, it's a matter of time, sooner or latter the end will come, eh, eh!

7-In a same way than the previous question, we can witness an evolution of the musical styles and bands claiming to be death metal are just deathcore or hardcore with guttural vocals or some bands always push farther the limits of speed & technicality. Do you think evolution is necessary in metal?

Yes, for the better or the worst. I think it's a natural thing, we are always trying to do something different, something new that no one had done before, it's in our blood. If you like it our not it is up to you to decide, just like in life there are good and bad things.

8-What does the scene looks like in Portugal? I mean, what about recommended bands (hey I guess people only know MOONSPELL, I know essentially some black metal hordes like INNER HELVETE & LUX FERRE, and about death metal I only know GROG), zines, alcohol, labels, etc…

It's growing, at each year that passes you see more bands, more zines, more festivals, new places to play, it's going in the right direction. If you want to know a bit of portuguese metal bands go to myspace and search them, there are a ton, black, death, doom, grind, thrash, heavy. Alcohol? Portuguese beer is the best, hail Super Bock, you have to try it to understand, if you can find it there we will send you a pack, eh, eh! (Jim:Why not!!!)

9-Have you been to Barroselas Metalfest 9 that happened on 28/29/30 April 2006? My landmates from BLOODY SIGN played here with American ESTUARY. You took part of the 2005 edition with INCANTION, FUNERUS, JUNGLE ROT, DESECRATION, GOREROTTED…how was the response regarding UNDERNEATH gig?

Very good, most of the people didn't know us but it went really well, the reviews were good and after the festival we started to receive more mails of people asking for our cd's. It is very important for the promotion of the band.

10-If a young metaller would start a band today, which are the records that would be essential to his "education" and what should be his state of mind?

They are too many to say, basically you have to know a bit of history of Metal, the roots and evolution. If you are starting a band for the fame and money give up, if you want to survive as a band you have to enjoy it and be prepared to make some sacrifices.

11-What are the records you bought recently? Anything to recommend or to throw away?

Bought? I´m always broke. God bless internet, eh, eh!
It's hard to say, there are a lot of good bands out there, especially european and australian. To throw away? Teenage metal.

12-This zine should be read by French bastards, so what do you know from us? Do you like some bands or zines? Is there anything you hate from France? How do people from Portugal consider us?

I really don't know a lot of you guys, the only thing that I have to say is that you are always ready to help without any bullshit and that you have beautiful women, eh, eh! All the bands that I know are fucking brutal, great musician's with great spirit, you guys really kick ass over there.
The only zines that I know are the Nihilistic Holocaust webzine/label that is working with us, and the Sick/Extremer zine. We respect you a lot, some time ago there were a lot of Portuguese people that have to leave the country and they were always well treated there, for that thanks a lot. Things that I don't like? French beer (sorry).

13-The football world cup is coming. Unsurprisingly, your language brothers from Brazil are favourites. Are you into football? Do you think Portugal has its chance this year and can create the surprise? Your prognostics, if ever interested?

We love football. It's hard to say who is favourite or who is going to win, at this stage anyone can make the difference. Hopefully the final will be Portugal/France.

14-Garras, thanks for your time! I wish you & UNDERNEATH all the best. I let you end this interview but before how would you translate "Hail death metal!" in Portuguese?

NERLICH interview 2006

2006 shall be the year of NERLICH! Created in autumn 2003 the band released 3 demos and proposed very talented old school death metal despite multiple line-up changes. Here are some words of Miikka (guitar & vocals) about NERLICH and his influences. Have a beer and celebrate this new hope of Finnish death metal, you’ve been warned!

1-Greetings to you all in NERLICH! I got the split CDR
with DECOHERENCE & GORGASM released by Nihilistic Holocaust and I must admit that your part of this stuff is just fucking great. This was in fact your demo 2004 but for a “simple” demo I find the sound powerful and I am impressed by your musicianship. So now, what are the news? You have recorded a full length album; did you find a label to release it? What are the reactions regarding NERLICH’s music?
We have recorded a full lenght album, it´s called "Defabricated Process". We have also found a label to release it. You will hear more about of it soon.
The reactions are pretty good. Most of the people seem to like us, but of course there´s people who don´t.

2-While writing those words, I am listening to your stuff and albums like “Effigy of the forgotten” and “Altars of Madness” are coming to my mind. It’s obvious that you are addicted to SUFFOCATION and MORBID ANGEL, am I right? Would you name other influences?

You’re right that SUFFOCATION has been a big influence for us, especially with their song structures. I like also MORBID ANGEL a lot, but it hasn’t influenced us so much. Our main influences are DEATH, SUFFOCATION, PESTILENCE, GORGUTS and other bands from early 90s.

3-What do you think of the latest releases of SUFFOCATION “Souls to deny” and MORBID ANGEL “Heretic”?
I think those both are pretty good albums. SUFFOCATION’s "Souls to deny" is good record. In the middle the record gets little bit boring, but otherwise it´s very good. I like it as much as the older SUFFOCATION records, but from MORBID ANGEL I like more the first four albums.

4-You are obviously a 90’s death metal supporter but how do you see the evolution of death metal today? Areyou interested in US brutal death metal with bands like DEEDS OF FLESH, LUST OF DECAY or BRODEQUIN? OrEuropean stuff like VISCERAL BLEEDING or ARSEBREED?
I don´t like the never bands so much, I like more the old ones. But I think that evolution is necessary in music so I don´t have have anything against those never bands. Mostly I just like the old bands. Our drummer Teemu likes more those bands with fast grinding like KRISIUN, VADER, SUFFOCATION and these never bands.

5-Do you like the bands sharing the split with you (DECOHERENCE & GORGASM)? Do you know other Frenchbands you eventually like?
I like GORGASM pretty much, and DECOHERENCE is ok too. I don´t know much French bands.

6-Are you satisfied with the promotion of Nihilistic Holocaust? For a DIY label, I find he does an awesome job that is sometimes better than a professional
label. What do you think of the way he runs his label? Are you into underground stuff like zines, demo tapes, vinyl…?
I think Gab does very good job with his label, he has also helped us a lot with his promotion etc. I have a lot of good demos, few rare tapes and vinyl’s, but I don’t have zines almost at all. I’m more into the old bands, and I buy their records.

7-NERLICH is a quite young band formed in 2003 with three demos and a coming album. You are productive. How many times do you rehearse? What material did you use actually to have this massive guitar & bass sound?
We rehearse about 1-3 times in a week, but there’s also weeks when we don’t play at all. Usually the rehearsals last about 5-6 hours, because there’s no point to travel long way to rehearsal place just to play two hours. We just practise and jam for 5 hours, have few 5-10 minute brakes in the middle, and then go home. I don’t remember what equipment we used. The bass sound came from our previous bass players Aria pro bass. I recorded guitars with my Jackson fusion pro-94. The amplifiers and effect pedals were the engineer’s.

8-While composing tracks, when did you put the singing patterns? I mean, you first create the music then you add voice? Explain your composition process.
Pretty much like that. First I compose some riffs and short parts. After that I start to figure out which riffs fit whit each other, and at the same time I arrange drum patterns and figure out where would be vocals etc. We also compose/arrange some parts of the songs at the rehearsal place... I start to write lyrics after the music is ready.

9-Your title tracks are in the pure obscure vibe of the 90’s dealing with death, decay and human degradation. Have you ever think of writing lyrics about social shit or religion?
We try to avoid writing lyrics that has something to do with religion. But otherwise we write lyrics about everything that we get ideas from.

10-There were many line-up changes. What are the main reasons? Who is the tyrant leading the uncompromising march of NERLICH?
There are a lot of different reasons for the line-up changes. Lack of time and motivation is the main reason why the line-up changes. One guitarist had a tumour in his hand (and motivation problems) so he quit.
There was also one guitarist, called Jarno, who left the band because he got pissed in us, mainly in me, because we’re saying to him that he must learn the songs and come to rehearsals if we want the things to work etc. He was always playing like shit and we tried to find a replacement for him few times. Then one day I got a childish text message from him where he said to me that I´m a asshole, because I´m complaining about those things I mentioned before and that he will leave the band. But the main reason why things didn´t work with him was that he was just too stupid. I’m the tyrant/leader of NERLICH. But I’ll listen what the other members think of things too.

11-Miikka, you are also involved in KATAPLEXIA as bassist. How do you get in touch with this death metal band? Can you give us some brief words about KATAPLEXIA?
I don’t remember how I get in touch with them. Finnish death metal scene is pretty small so I knew Rodrigo and that way I ended to play in the band. KATAPLEXIA is going to do a small tour in Spain on June and the band is writing new songs at the moment for a new full length album.

12-Does the exposition of mainstream shit of Finland (I mean STRATOVARIUS and CHILDREN OF BODOM for example) help underground acts as NERLICH or CADAVERIC INCUBATOR getting more attention worldwide?
Metal gets more listeners, because it’s so mainstream in Finland, and also that way more people get into the underground stuff too. But I don’t think the mainstream metal bands help underground bands to get attention worldwide.

13-I only know two countries (Finland and Norway) where metal bands reach national charts? Didn’t you find this strange? Don’t you feel metal or at least extreme metal shall remain underground? What’s your view on this?
I don´t like those bands so much who reach the charts, those are mostly that melodic metal style that I don´t like. For me it´s the same if extreme metal, like death metal stays underground or not. It doesn´t change the music, for example OBITUARY´s “Cause of Death” would still be a good record, if everyone owns it or not.

14-Are you interested in black metal? Finland owns few bands like HORNA, BEHEXEN, PEST, BEHERIT, SATANIC WARMASTER, IMPALED NAZARENE… Are you in contact with some of them?
We´re not so interested in black metal. I know most of those bands, but I don´t like black metal so much, except that some black metal bands have very good dark atmosphere in their music. btw, IMPALED NAZARENE plays in the same rehearsal place as we do.
Otherwise we don´t know so much people from black metal scene. NERLICH is more in contact with the punk scene than with black metal.

15-I didn’t know any fucking beer from Finland, anything to recommend? What are your favourite brews? Do you know some foreign alcohols?
Karhu is my favorite Finnish beer. But all of the finnish beers are ok to me. "Salmiakkikossu" is recommended to all foreign people who haven´t got used in the taste of salmiakki.

16-What are you listening while answering my questions? Anything to recommend?
I´m listening to PINK FLOYD´s “Wish you we’re here”. Also the new BOLT THROWER album “Those Once Loyal” has been a lot in my CD-player recently. Those two CDs are recommended.

DISGUST interview 2006 (in French)

Ils sont de retour ! Après une longue absence, les vétérans de DISGUST sont bien décidés à botter des culs et à régler certains comptes ! Fini les emmerdes avec les labels foireux, le groupe sort sa musique sur un label de confiance « Great Dane Records ». On leur souhaite le meilleur et on attend la suite avec impatience. Petit entretien avec Geoff et Ben.

-Salutations à vous, death métalleux du Nord ! Tout d’abord félicitations pour ce putain de split CD DISGUST / SCARVENGER puisque DISGUST n’avait rien sorti depuis 5 ans et que SCARVENGER sort enfin son premier release (à part un très confidentiel live promo). Bon alors, parlons du groupe ; pouvez vous présenter DISGUST aux lecteurs de ce zine putride ?
Geoff : D’abord, merci à toi, pour la chronique. C’est toujours agréable de se sentir soutenu.
DISGUST existe depuis 1991. Après plusieurs changement de Line Up et plusieurs démos, DISGUST sort son premier album « In Aeternum » en 2000 chez Shockwave Records avec Stéphane Buriez de LOUDBLAST aux manettes.
L’album est chroniqué fort positivement par la presse et reçoit un très bon accueil du publique. Malheureusement, des problèmes avec le label bloque le groupe durant quelque temps.
En 2003, Christophe (ex GERBE OF LIFE) et moi même, Geoff (ex MEAT PAUNCH MAFIA, SPLATTER, DOGMATIC STATE), deux membres du Line up d’origine, réintégrons DISGUST.
La nouvelle formation s’attèle maintenant à la composition de la suite d’ « In Aeternum » mais évolue toujours dans un Death Metal brutal et sans compromis.
Fin 2005, DISGUST sort un Split CD avec SCARVENGER sur un nouveau Label « Great Dane Records ». DISGUST, c’est Ben aux vocals, Laurent à la batterie, Frank et Geoff aux Grattes et Christophe à la basse.

-Parlons-en de ce fameux CD « In Aeternum » ! Il est introuvable, alors peut-on espérer une réédition et peux tu nous parler de ces emmerdes avec votre label de l’époque Shockwave/ Warpath records?
Geoff : Perso, je n’étais pas dans DISGUST à cette époque, donc Ben en parlera mieux que moi. Mais d’après ce que j’ai compris, Shockwave a fait un énorme travail niveau promo (sic), mais le disque était introuvable en magasin !!!. Enfin bref, maintenant, pour moi, c’est de l’histoire ancienne. On est en train de penser à la façon de ressortir cet album. C’est prévu pour bientôt …

BeN : Oui le CD s’est retrouvé distribué un peu partout (internationalement)…c’est le point positif qu’il faut relever de cette histoire…Par contre on a financé l’enregistrement de A à Z et ce label ne nous a pas reversé tout les royalties….Donc non, pour moi c’est pas de l’histoire ancienne et ce label a fait et fera toujours partie de l’histoire de DISGUST, je les tiens pour responsable de la stagnation de DISGUST, ils sont méprisables dans le sens où ils n’ont pas tenu compte que derrière notre musique et notre création il y a avant tout des passionnés mais aussi des gens qui s’investissent …Par exemple, pour venir répéter je fais 140 bornes aller retour (et bientôt +)…. Ce label a pris nos bandes, le matos, ont pressé le tout…Ils possèdent d’ailleurs toujours tout ça… Il n’ y a plus de communication … Tranquille de faire un label dans ces conditions …. Je n’utilise pas mon énergie et mon temps afin d’engraisser où de participer à une quelconque « Gloriole » de ce genre d’enculés…. Donc sachez Messieurs dames de Warpath : rien n’est oublié et qu’à chaque Merde, Quelque part on pense à vous bien fort, rien n’est oublié…. A bientôt….

-Apparement les 4 titres de ce split ne sont qu’un avant goût de l’album à venir. Allez vous continuer dans le style proposé par le split CD, à savoir un mélange de death brutal puisant aussi bien ses influences dans le death américain (les débuts de DEICIDE, DEATH, SUFFOCATION, ROTTREVORE…), que dans le death suédois (GRAVE, DISMEMBER, INVERTED…)?
Geoff : Les 4 titres de ce split CD montrent l’évolution de DISGUST depuis sa création. Chaque morceau est tiré d’une de nos démos ou de notre album, sauf « Corridor of Death » qui lui est inédit. Les nouvelles compos de DISGUST seront toujours aussi efficace et toujours aussi brutal, sauf que d’autres influences s’y sont greffées …

BeN : Nous sommes également libérés de tout complexe d’infériorité par rapport à tous ces groupes si « prestigieux » et mis en avant par la presse (parfois c’est à se demander si certains ressentent la musique et ont des oreilles, y compris les labels), là où on peut « gêner » c’est qu’on démystifie tout ça… On est pas Ricain , on est pas suédois… Mais le Death metal qu’on créé arrive bien droit dans la gueule… On a déjà eu des remarques … « ah, vous êtes Français ???? » Le moins que l’on puisse dire c’est que nous ne sommes pas chauvins dans ce pays…. Ce n’est pas un avantage d’être Français en tout point pour le METAL en général…

-J’aime beaucoup le son des grattes ; bien gras, ni trop clean ni trop cradingue. Quel accordage utilisez vous et avec quel matériel obtenez vous ce son (guitares, amplis, etc…)?
Geoff : Nous ne sommes pas de ces groupes qui utilisent une multitude d’effets pour au final avoir un son qui casse pas des briques. En fait nous utilisons un bon Marshall Valvestate 100W, c’est tout !!!!! En plus, pour le live, ça va vite pour les réglages. Pour ce qui est des grattes, Frank joue sur une BC Rich et moi, sur une 7 cordes Ibanez RG7, nous sommes accordés en A+, ce qui nous donne le coté « gras » de DISGUST.

-DISGUST reste très ancré dans le brutal death old school des 90’s, que pensez vous de toute cette vague de groupes actuels surproduits qui peu à peu s’éloignent de leurs style originel pour virer en trucs plus modernes (voire avec des influences hardcore !), je pense à ABORTED ou DECAPITATED ?
Geoff : Je trouve que les groupes de Death Métal actuel privilégient trop la technique et la vitesse au détriment de la puissance et de l’efficacité des morceaux. Ce qui fait qu’avec ce genre de music, en concert, tu te prends une belle claque sur les 2 premiers titres parce que les musicos te sortent des trucs pas possibles avec leur instru. Mais au troisième titre, tu te casses car tu t’ennuies !!!!! Après, la vague MetalCore, ouais bof, mis à part DYING FETUS, qui a amené le style, je ne suis pas très fan.
Par contre, j’ai toujours aimé ce que fait ABORTED, car on sent bien que ce sont de gros fan de CARCASS. Leurs morceaux sont bons et ultra efficaces, en plus Sven et Gilles sont de bon potes.

BeN : Tu dis ça parce que tu es jaloux Geoff (he he ) ... Je suis un inconditionnel de HATE ETERNAL. Pour ce qui est des influences Hardcore dans le death… Pourquoi pas mais à dose homéopathique … Le Death doit rester malsain, oppressant et Morbide. Left hand path… Ceux du chemin de la main gauche…
Je me verrai pas sautiller comme un débile avec un bandana sur mon crâne !!! Ridicule Non ?
En même temps on s’est déjà octroyé une reprise de S.O.D, FREDDY KRUEGGER… Bon là j’ai été forcé ha ha !

-Quand on regarde les groupes plus anciens comme CRUSHER, MASSACRA, NO RETURN, LOUDBLAST, MISANTHROPE, AGRESSOR, MERCYLESS, CATACOMB,…certains n’existent plus, d’autres font de la daube et finalement peu de groupes sont restés fidèles à leur début à part DISGUST et AGRESSOR. Comment avez-vous fait pour conserver votre détermination intacte ? Quel regard portes tu sur la scène de cette période et celle d’aujourd’hui ?
Geoff : Oh, le coup de vieux, d’un coup !!!! Et oui, nous faisons parti de cette génération … D’ailleurs, j’aimerais que certains de ces groupes reviennent.
En fait, nous n’avons pas changé parce qu’on ne sait faire que ça !!! Non, je plaisante. En fait, nous jouons avant tout pour nous, on se fait plaisir, après si le publique adhère et vient délirer avec nous, on est super contant.

BeN : Ce style de musique ça se joue pas ! ça se vit… On transpire le Death Metal …C’est ça le truc.

-D’où est venu l’idée du split CD avec SCARVENGER ? Etait-ce un accord mutuel entre les deux groupes après une soirée de beuverie ?
Geoff : Ouais, c’est un peu ça l’idée. En fait, nous connaissons Christophe de SCARVENGER depuis une quinzaine d’années. Le choix de les faire figurer sur ce split s’est imposé de lui même, on a pas trop réfléchi. Avec le recul, réunir deux groupes de Death Metal, mais dans des genres complètement opposés, était plutôt risqué, mais, on s’est fait plaisir.

-Qu’en est-il des concerts ? Apparemment vous jouez essentiellement dans le Nord ; vous n’avez jamais eu de propositions ailleurs, sur Paris ou dans le Sud ? Quelles sont vos conditions pour venir nous botter le cul ici bas, en fucking Poitou-Charentes ? Un petit concert DISGUST / DEEP VEIN pourrait être sympa, hé hé !
Geoff : On a déjà joué sur Paris avec INHUMATE au Gibus et à la Roche sur Yon avec DERANGED et BLOCKHEADS. Les derniers concerts étaient pour roder notre nouveau set, donc c’est vrai que nous avons privilégié le nord. Mis à part le KILLER FEST 2006 avec ENTOMBED et DISMEMBER, nous n’avons pas fait de grosses date. En même temps, après 5 ans de quasi absence ...
Il y a quelques dates en préparation dont une sur Poitiers, mais rien de confirmé pour l’instant, donc si t’as des plans …

BeN : Attention, on est gourmand au niveau des groupies ! he he Toutes les propositions sont en tout cas le bienvenues !

-Geoff, tu t’occupes aussi du label Great Dane Records dont la première sortie est justement ce split CD; comment est née l’idée du label ? Avais-tu essayé de démarcher des labels auparavant ?
Geoff : Yes, GREAT DANE Records a été créé par Raph, vendeur Metal dans une grande enseigne Lilloise. Il m’a demandé si je voulais faire parti du bureau et j’ai accepté.
Avec la crise du disque du au téléchargement, la plupart des labels, que nous avions contacté ne voulaient pas nous produire, mais juste nous distribuer. Alors quand Raph nous a fait sa proposition, on a sauté sur l’occasion.

-Quelle est l’actualité du label ? J’ai entendu parler de la sortie du CD des black métalleux de NIRNAETH. Avez-vous aussi songé à faire du merchandising?
Geoff : NIRNAETH est un groupe que nous allons distribuer, au même titre que BYATIS, MASSAULT et WILD KARNIVOR. Nous allons prochainement produire VAKARM groupe d’Amiens qui pratiquent du gros Death Metal à la Cannibal. Pour le Merchandising, on est justement en train de discuter avec plusieurs fournisseurs pour faire des T-shirts. Ça devrait plus tarder.

-Le fait d’avoir monté ton propre label a dû beaucoup t’apprendre concernant le milieu musical, la promotion, les échanges, les rip-offs, etc.… Quels labels actuels ont tes faveurs et au contraire quels sont ceux qu’il vaudrait mieux éviter ?
Geoff : Oh là, je ne me lancerais pas dans ces discussions. Chacun, sa façon de fonctionner. GREAT DANE Records est un label très jeune. Nous avons la chance d’avoir une bonne distribution en France mais c’est vrai que nous n’avons pas encore de réseau « underground » très développé. On est en train de le mettre en place petit à petit …
Pour ce qui est des Rip-offs, DISGUST a donné. C’est pour cette raison qu’avec le label, on veut faire les choses le plus clairement possible pour les groupes dont on s’occupe.
C’est certain, on ferra des erreurs, … mais on les corrigera.

-La scène extrême devient de plus en plus mainstream (ça devient cool d’écouter du death ou du black plus ou moins convenu), et certains labels présentent leurs produits comme s’ils vendaient de la variété. Un comble quand même pour un style qui provoquait le rejet à ses débuts. Que penses tu de ce marketing à la con et de tous ces putains de groupes de poseurs ?
BeN : La promo est quelque part indispensable pour te faire un nom et avoir un impact honnête sur la scène extrême… Certains groupes en valent la peine… beaucoup d’autres sont mis en avant selon les trends mais pas pour leur musicalité…. C’est ça qui pue, malheureusement une partie du public réagit comme ça et les labels s’adaptent à cette réalité… C’est quelque part leur boulot… Ensuite si le groupe lui-même est honnête avec lui-même… No problemo ! J’aime les Poseurs morts et les poseuses qui avalent ….

- Il faut bien admettre que le Nord de la France possède une réelle scène death metal : AMETHYSTE, BYATIS (RIP), SCARVENGER, SEPULCRAL, DEVIANT SURGEONS, GORYPTIC, … Connaissez vous d’autres groupes en France qu’éventuellement vous trouvez dignes d’intérêt ? Connaissez vous GOROD (ex-GORGASM), OFFENDING, VAGINAL PURULENCE, UNFRAGMENT, BLOODSHED…
Geoff : Les groupes AMETHYSTE, SCARVENGER et GORYPTIC sont de bons potes de DISGUST. Tu peux aussi ajouter TREPAN’DEAD, WARSCARS dans ta liste. (Pour BYATIS, je dirais ex-RIP, mais wait & see …)
C’est clair qu’on a pas à se plaindre niveau excellent groupe dans le Nord.
Et non, je ne connais pas ceux dont tu me parles là. Il y a tellement de formations underground maintenant qu’on ne peut plus suivre.
La scène française à toujours été excellente, mais les groupes qui m’ont bien botté ces derniers temps sont HAPPY FACE, DROWNING, IMPUREZA, VAKARM et ALTERED BEAST.

-De plus en plus d’associations se montent pour organiser des concerts et on trouve un peu plus de lieux pour que les groupes puissent jouer bien que ça ne soit pas encore l’extase. Est-ce que le public est présent aux petits concerts de groupes locaux ? Quelles sont les assos que l’on peut trouver dans le Nord ?
Geoff : On va venir habiter chez vous alors !!! Le public de Lille est assez spécial, il soutient très peu les groupes issus de son coin et préfère se déplacer pour les grosses dates. Il y a pourtant des assos comme AlienAsso, Hempire, le Chant du Bouc qui se bougent pour organiser de bonnes dates, mais ils rentrent rarement dans leur frais. Il y a aussi de moins en moins de petits lieus de concert sur Lille, donc quand tu débutes, c’est pas toujours évident de se faire connaître. C’est dommage !
Par contre, sans aller bien loin, le public en Picardie ou dans le Pas-de-Calais est carrément excellent. En plus nous avons la chance d’être à coté de la Belgique qui est un putain de pays pour ce style de zic.

-Qu’est-ce que vous écoutez en ce moment ? Qu’avez-vous pensé des récents concerts de DEICIDE et MORBID ANGEL si vous les avez vus bien sûr ?
Geoff : Je n’ai jamais apprécié DEICIDE en concert, donc perso, pas d’avis sur ce groupe. J’ai vu MORBID ANGEL avec le retour de Monsieur David Vincent et moi qui les ai connu à cette époque, j’ai enfin retrouvé le grand MORBID ANGEL !!! Mais là, c’est le côté sentimental qui prend le dessus. Mes rêves inaccessibles seraient une réformation de CARCASS époque Reek of Putrefaction, de NAPALM DEATH avec son Scum ou son Feto avec la formation d’origine et CANNIBAL CORPSE version Butchered at birth.
Pour ce que j’écoute, tu vas peut être délirer mais, en ce moment, ce qui tourne chez moi, c’est TOOL, KATATONIA, NILE et le dernier SUFFOCATION. (on se refait pas)

-Il semble évident que DISGUST soit en bonne voie pour durer encore longtemps ; que vous reste t’il à réaliser ? Une reconnaissance à l’étranger semble être la prochaine étape ? Avez-vous des contacts au-delà de nos frontières ?
Geoff : Tant qu’on prendra notre pied à jouer, DISGUST durera. C’est vrai qu’on aimerait passer au niveau supérieur, donc jouer à l’étranger semble la prochaine étape.

BeN : Le deuxième album va déterminer tout ça… Les coups d’épées dans l’eau peuvent fatiguer et le but est de faire mieux que « In aeternum… » à tous les niveaux sinon la retraite pour ma part sera inéluctable. Pour moi la « série » DISGUST dans la rubrique des chiens écrasés et coup de bâtons dans les roues s’arrêtera là.

-Je vais arrêter de vous emmerder avec mes questions ! Merci à vous et bonne continuation. J’attends votre 2ème album du pied ferme !

NO HAND PATH interview 2006

Here’s a recent demo I got from Ramin of NO HAND PATH that impressed me a lot by its many musical qualities and its obscure atmospheres. The band keeps some mystery about them and can be seen as an alternative of today dark/black metal. To understand what I mean, I encourage you to get their demo.

-Hail Ramin, please introduce NO HAND PATH to our readers. What is the musical background of the members? Listening to “First Farewell”, it’s obvious you are not beginners!
Hailz! NHP is a quite new band from Greece formed in 2005. This year (2006) we released our first demo called “First Farewell”. None of the permanent members of NHP has ever been in any other metal act. We don’t really have any deep musical education, what you hear is just works of love for what we’re doing!

-Your first demo really impressed me, firstly because of a remarkable production and secondly because of a tight musicianship. The demo is just out (July 2006); do you intend to contact labels? What are the reactions around you?
Well, thank you! In fact we paid much attention to the production, we hate it when good music loses its strength due to the bad production values… We think it’s a bit too soon for
us to start looking for a label. Our music needs some time to mature a little more in our minds.
I think our next work will also be a self-financed release. Time will tell…
Until now, we‘ve had only a little feedback – “First Farewell” has just been released – but the reactions are more than encouraging. People seem to like our stuff!

-Which bands would you name as influences? Do you feel close to any bands or musical movement? What about philosophy (“…my thirst for Wisdom grows…”)?
Each member of the band has his own musical influences, sometimes close to each other
and sometimes completely different and I really think this is pretty obvious in our music.
Of course our common influence is Black Metal. Personally I like bands like (the true) MAYHEM, MARDUK, LIMBONIC ART, DARKTHRONE, BATHORY, ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, NAER MATARON and some newer bands like WATAIN. I also like much non-Metal stuff.
The conversation about Philosophy could take hours…We prefer to express our dark emotions and inner travels through NHP. As for the lyrics of the “First Farewell”, they were written by Antonis and Vassilis, so they would be the right persons to fill you in.

-Another important point of “First Farewell” is the intense atmosphere where emerged darkness, hatred, grief, coldness, despair… You seemed to focus more on this atmosphere than just brutality? How would you describe your music? Do you consider NO HAND PATH as a black metal band? I think it’s restrictive.
Yes, I think you’re right. Describing NHP as a Black Metal band wouldn’t be correct. BM is our major influence but definitely not the only one.
Our lyrical content also isn’t BM. Don’t forget that this style of music is created to express certain beliefs, and they aren’t part of the NHP’s Philosophy .

-The same would apply to your lyrics. It’s not about cheap satanism or occultism. You seemed fascinated by sickness, insanity and the throes of the mind. Is this because it’s less used as lyrics or are you obsessed by these topics? What are the journeys you are referring to?
The topics you mentioned are indeed what inspire us the most, plus the religious insanity ruining the human kind… We don’t really care if anyone has used these topics, it’s just what interests us in our NHP works.
Each of the songs in our demo is referred to as a journey (the Deepest, the Darkest and the Longest). In fact we see each song as an inner journey combining its music and lyrics. As for the characterizations we gave to the songs, I think that a closer look to their lyrics will show the reason.

-Why do you choose a moniker like NO HAND PATH? We can translate this as “no escape” or “no choice”. Is there a link with “left hand path”? Can you give us an explanation?
No, no. We don’t mean nothing like no ‘escape’ or ‘no choice’. Our name represents a spiritual path. By using it, we want to express the ability that everyone has to make his own choices, follow his own rules and serve his own beliefs. This is where religions have made the biggest damage turning their “laments” to actual sheep!

-Inside the booklet of your demo we can see someone hiding his face with his hands but these hands are transparent thus we can see his face. What is the meaning of this? Can it suggest the fatality, no use to hide or to flee? The “No Hand Path”?
Hehehe… You got us there… We used this picture basically because we find it nice and matching to our music aesthetically. Nice explanation though!!

-Some musicians helped you in the recording of “First Farewell”: Haris from VARATHRON and Sotiris from REVOLTING BREED. The first is quite well known but REVOLTING BREED is unknown to me and most of our readers. Can you give us few words about this collaboration? Are they permanent members? Are you going to play gigs with this formation?
First of all both Haris and Sotiris are members of VARATHRON and REVOLTING BREED. RB is a new band from Greece. By now they should be at the end of their first recording. BEWARE !!! Judging from their live performances it will be bonesmashing!
We worked with them, first of all because they‘re friends of us and pretty cool guys and secondly because they also like stuff like ours. They aren’t permanent members (though we would love them to be) mostly because of the lack of free time, but some gigs may take place with this formation. We’ll see.

-VARATHRON is considered as a cult Greek act in the worldwide scene. The band started playing pure black metal and then evolved into a more powerful black/death orientation. I am more into their early stuff. Do you like this band? How do you witness the career of VARATHRON?
I love bands like VARATHRON. They literally created what we call Greek BM scene.
I see the differences in their career as natural evolution although I also like their older work a little more than their new. There’s a rumour that the new album will be a fucking great piece of dark and cold art! Have an eye open!

-The third song of your demo is an instrumental. Is it a way to give a different view of NO HAND PATH and the next recordings? Do you intend to release a full length later or will you release another demo?
The instrumental track shows a different form of expression for us. It isn’t a sample for the next recordings, it’s just a different point of view.
We don’t have specific plans for our next recording, but I think that it will be another demo.. After all we like being a part of the Underground!

-Can you talk about the Greek scene? Most of us know NECROMANTIA, ROTTING CHRIST, SEPTIC FLESH and VARATHRON. What are the nowadays bands that sounds promising? Do you like bands like DEAD CONGREGATION, INVERACITY, SICKENING HORROR and OBSECRATION?
There are too many promising bands to mention, even to remember, but most of them haven’t made many releases. Some of my personal faves are DEVA NOCTUA ENTROPIA, RAVENCULT, SatyagRAHA, DECEMBERANCE, RITUAL OF THE BLACK SUN and MASS INFECTION.
I wouldn’t say I’m into the music of the bands you mentioned.

-How do you consider the use of internet? On one hand it can be a useful tool for quick communication and promotion, on the other hand anyone can get the music he wants with shitty mp3. Do you believe that bands are going to sell their music through this process to avoid getting stolen? Are we gonna buy virtual stuff without covers?
This is bullcrap! Surely the internet has stolen much of the past’s ‘romanticism’ but I really
don’t think that a crappy bunch of mp3’s with no cover and no actual human communication
interests any self-respecting metalheads. People can just have a sample of somebody’s work
and if they like it they’ll get the real thing. That’s the point!


-Are you familiar with my country? Do you have any contacts there? Which bands get your attention? How French people are perceived in Greece?
I am a little familiar with some bands from your country. Personally I like BM bands like DEATHSPELL OMEGA. There’s a lot of respect here for the French bands!

-My traditional question: what are the latest releases you enjoy a lot actually? What are you listening to while answering this interview?
I can’t say I’ve heard many recently released stuff… These days I listen to WATAIN’s “Casus Luciferi” a lot, along with some non-Metal stuff. I don’t really follow what the “big” bands are doing lately, I prefer listening to more Underground stuff. Check out SatyagRAHA’s mini LP if you want something different.
Right now I’m listening to DEVA NOCTUA ENTROPIA’s “Transerpentual” cd.
