KATHGOR demo 2009 Review

KATHGOR (Malaysia) – Descendants from the depth
Demo tape 2009 – Self released
4 tracks
Rated: 8/10

Impressive demo tape; not that it crushes the established laws of death metal, but more in the way KATHGOR practices death metal. The chosen path is the 90's death metal, with a thrash metal edge, quite common stuff but at least they didn't chose the old school Swedish death metal ground as it's cool to do it today. After a clear sound introduction that set up a kind of haunting atmoshpere, you get engulfed in a death/thrash sphere reminding bands like INCUBUS, RESURRECTION or early MALEVOLENT CREATION. Many catchy heabanging parts appears as well as nice guitar solos (torture that whammy bar!!!), the band is conscious to incorporate memorable parts, a good point. The early works of MORBID ANGEL and SINISTER can help to situate the level of brutality KATHGOR can reach. The demo sound has a crude side I like, everything is audible maybe except the bass, drums are a bit too loud especially during the blasting parts, but still it's a detail.
Any voracious demo tape eater shall get this tape if they're into the brutal death/thrash metal with a die-hard spirit.
