DEAD CONGREGATION Graves of the archangels Review

DEAD CONGREGATION (Greece) – Graves of the archangels
CD 2008 – Nuclear War Now! Productions
9 tracks – 43'41
Rated: 9/10

« Purifying consecrated ground » was the milestone of what DEAD CONGREGATION was going to be. This MCD/MLP got very good response in the underground as well as in mainstream magazines & webzines. The following and awaited album is here and DEAD CONGREGATION really records a very good album with « Graves of the archangels ». A continuation of the previous recording but everything here is soundind better, the tracks are more efficient and well structured and all this without being original.
The instrumental « Martyrdoom » starting the album is a killer piece of evil metal with human destruction intents. The first time I heard it I immediately think that Anastasis probably listen a lot to ARKHON INFAUSTUS « Perdition Insanabilis » because of many similarities sounding wise. But having influences is not a crime and Anastasis never hides he enjoys the French bastards' music.
If the names of INCANTATION and IMMOLATION are fucking obvious, don't limit DEAD CONGREGATION as a clone of those bands. DEAD CONGREGATION has a personal songwriting with haunting riffs and evil melodies, the band is also brutal but that's not their only aim to hide some musical poverty. Some twisted slower riffs can evoke some MORBID ANGEL « Gateways... » era or sometimes even « Covenant » on more fast and catchy tunes like the eponym track.
The main characterisitc of « Graves... » is the incredible atmosphere generated all along the album, this is probably more soulpossessing than any of the lastest orthodox black metal record that got out recently. If you're into obscure death metal you simply can't miss this release which has enough qualities to quench your thirst for evil metal.
