UNNATURAL Life Review

UNNATURAL (Spa) – Life
CD 2004 – Burning Dogma Records
16 tracks – 76’07
Rated: 7,5/10

UNNATURAL is among the oldest death metal bands from Spain and there are probably unknown to many on the contrary of bands like AVULSED, FERMENTO or REINCARNATION. UNNATURAL started in 1992 and releases various demos, a split and a MCD which are gathered here as a band’s whole discography and this can be seen as a second chance to discover UNNATURAL.
The CD started with their last release, the 1997 CD “Throne of anguish” shows a powerful death metal band that certainly should feel ashamed in comparison of what was played back then. UNNATURAL some quite technical old school brutal death metal with a dark edge, reminding IMMOLATION (the early stuff up to “Failure for gods”), the two first GORGUTS albums, some MORBID ANGEL and DEATH for the solos and INFAMY for the guttural vocals. The four tracks are astonishing when you think about the time they were released; you can’t understand why the band ceased their activity, maybe a lack of promotion back then? Anyway just these four tracks justify the purchase of this release.
The following four tracks came from a split from 1994 with DISMAL and ABSORBED. The tracks are in the vein of the MCD, a bit rawer and primitive, reminding “Dawn of possession” sometimes and some DEATH “Spiritual healing” for the solos. UNNATURAL used less technical parts and less brutality but was still able to spawn dark moods with the use of (non sucky) melodies.
The demo 1996 is featured here with three tracks announcing what UNNATURAL was going to do for the upcoming MCD. The music here is twisted and the darkest of their discography. The influences mentioned above are still there but absorbed, mixed and released in a more personal way.
The CD ends with five live tracks from 1997 (with killer sound!) from each recording, an ultimate testament from this underrated band.
