DEATH BREATH Stinking up the night Review

DEATH BREATH (Swe) – Stinking up the night
CD 2006 – Black Lodge Records
10 tracks – 34’
Rated: 8/10
Nicke Anderson (ex-NIHILIST/ENTOMBED) going back to his death metal roots, that can sound pretentious or opportunist as these days this old school death metal boom is increasingly becoming exaggerated. Many things similar have been said about bands such as BLOODBATH or CHAOSBREED so what can be said about DEATH BREATH?
Nicke Anderson still has the same influences as he had back in his early years, that is to say: DEATH and AUTOPSY. DEATH BREATH, if sometimes reminding NIHILIST and early ENTOMBED, is heavily inspired by the death metal gods who are DEATH and AUTOPSY. When playing “Stinking up the night” in your hi-fi, those names immediately come to my mind music wise but also sound wise as DEATH BREATH doesn’t come with the top notch production but more with a dirty and heavy one. DEATH BREATH tries to capture the old feeling of death and achieved to play something good and convincing. But does DEATH BREATH brings something new with this mass of vulgar necrolatry? Hard to say; definitively not but they have such a morbid feeling and those catchy riffs that stick to your decaying brain (coffins of the unembalmed dead, reduced to ashes), no use to resist. They also have this putrid death n’ roll touch, all these great guitar solos and these possessed screams of agony.
Of course, the band is sometimes close to plagiarism as some riffs seem to get stolen from early DEATH albums (the first riff in “Christ all fucking mighty”) but I think it’s more seen as an homage.
Worth the listening!
