DYSTOPIC demo 2007 review

DYSTOPIC (Chile) – Chant of the reptile
Demo CD 2007 – Self released
5 tracks – 19’51
Rated: 5/10
A one man band hailing from Santiago of Chile and playing some fucking death metal. One man project rarely reaches high expectations as sometimes the guy doesn’t step backward or plays common music with too loud mixed drum programming for the sake of brutality. In the case of DYSTOPIC even if the main man PW does everything from music to recording, mixing and mastering, you can feel that he has some experience though. Not that he released the demo of the year but there are some interesting elements within these five tracks.
DYSTOPIC plays some brutal unholy death metal in the vein of the 90’s but has probably some influences coming from more recent brutal acts such as HATE ETERNAL or NILE. The music itself reminds early KRISIUN mixed with dark riffing à la MORBID ANGEL. DYSTOPIC even if having many blasting parts, alternates with slower dark parts including some nice guitar solos. The recipe is a bit the same from a track to another but, hey, it’s a first release so that’s not so bad. Another point that annoys me is the use of drum programming which sounds so “inorganic” but that’s probably how the band wants to sound. An element that DYSTOPIC masters well is the creation of dark atmospheres or the use of more mid paced parts. Hope that DYSTOPIC won’t keep up on playing ultra speedy music but keep a balanced mixture of both fast and slow elements to help the tracks remaining interesting.
