OBLITERATION Perpetual decay Review

OBLITERATION (Norway) – Perpetual decay
CD 2007 – Peaceville Records
10 tracks – 34'03
Rated: 8,5/10
I must apologize for not featuring this great death metal in my previous issue, however I manage to introduce a Norvegian death metal act in all my issue firstly with DISKORD, then ABOMINAT and today OBLITERATION.
This « Perpetual decay » is again a good surprise and actually a must-have for any death metal freak as it gathers all the glorious elements of the 90's death metal movement. OBLITERATION takes a vile pleasure to mix numerous influences to induce the poor reviewer I am into confusion. Many bands come to mind and it's quite hazardous to pick them all. Probably wr have here a blend of DARKTHRONE (1st album), AUTOPSY, old MORBID ANGEL, ENTOMBED, early DEATH, and many more...
Being a mixture of those band isn't enough to reach the excellence, you also need to have good songs and it's the case here.
Despite the quite good production, the band keep up some morbidity with typical riffs à la early DEATH, cool guitar solos and even dark melody (5th track called « Instrumental » or the 10th track « Sinstorm » with its old ENTOMBED/DEATH BREATH morbid side). They also keep a brutal aspect all along the CD with short tracks, fast parts and the use of blast beats and punchy breaks in the old SUFFOCATION vein, so without being a lame brutal death band, OBLITERATION has a « in your face » impact. I stop here the appreciations, despite any originality this release is highly recommended.
