COFFINS / SKULLHOG split EP review

COFFINS / SKULLHOG (Japan/Nederland) – S/T
Split EP 2008 – No Escape Records
3 tracks
Rated: 5/10 - 7/10
The doom/death veterans of COFFINS strikes first with another of their numerous split release. The band's trademark didn't change, ultra heavy death/doom metal where the Finnish school's stench of death can be smelt (FUNEBRE & ABHORRENCE mainly). A new track and a CARNAGE cover (tuned lower of corpse to be COFFINS-ized). Nothing astonishing.
SKULLHOG seems to be the continuation of BILE, but from what I heard of BILE it was more death/gore/grind oriented, and this track of SKULLHOG named « Tusks of gore » is somewhat different from BILE's usal regurgitations. Here the track starts with a slow rhythm led by drums before being rejoined by the other instruments. « Tusks of gore » is some old school doom/death metal with a voice reminding Martin Van Drunen. Even the track suppurates this old ASPHYX vibe, very filthy with a crude and rehearsal-like sound. Hard to really give an opinion, I need to listen more but putridely interesting though.
