VAMPIR Zine #13 review

VAMPIR Zine #13 (Macedonia)
February 2008
60 pages A5 written in english

I finally manages to get a copy of VAMPIR Zine which I saw and many ads and reviews about it. I wad a bit afraid that VAMPIR would be closer to a metal magazine but I was wrong. VAMPIR Zine comes with a color cover and a xeroxed pro printed lay-out. The set-up is clear, well compiled and not overcharged.
The whole tone of the zine make you feel that Darko the editor is a real metal maniac and that his involvment in the scene is sincere. Beside to his zine, Darko also has a small label/distro activity called Terror Blast releasing various stuff on CDR or Tape format like BLOODY SIGN, INFEST or MARAS/XERION split release.
Back to the zine, the major point of VAMPIR are the interviews with some killer acts such as HACAVITZ, MODER, ESTUARY, DESASTER, INCANTATION, XERION, INFEST (thrash metal from Serbia), ARHONT and HELLSPIRIT. Usually they turn out with a cool spirit, Darko has interesting points of view and the answers are satisfying if I can say so. The best intie are certainly those with ESTUARY and INCANTATION because they were done with a recorder, so the spontaneous aspect brings another dimension compared to the usual interview done by letter or email.
A shitload of reviews can be found as well, and without stating it's the weakest point of the zine, I'd better say they aren't sometimes too much developped. Mostly you can read a short description and that's all, I think that it's not enough concerning the informative side, because for example the newbie would feel confused. I talk here about some musical stuff because the zines and vinyl reviews are ok. Of course I understand that sometimes, some stuff isn't really inspiring.
The gigs reviews sections has also an important part in the zine with lots of cool pictures. Darko points out the few attendance at gigs and I sadly can confirm that the same thing happens here in France except for big bands of modern pseudo metal (but that's another debate).
A section named the Metal Diary shows two articles written one by Carlos Rojas of Rawblackult Prod and the other by Jerasak of Witchammer Prod, talking about their activities. Plus a third article about the Malaysian metal scene written by Mr Ed of Sangwitok Zine.
All in all, VAMPIR Zine is a really good zine with its own personality and a real underground spirit, I just feel shameful to discover it so lately.
