The re-release on tape format of their 2005 demo CD by Greek label Black Vomit Records gives a second chance to this Brazilian black/death metal outfit.
CATACUMBA is mostly old school black metal oriented, choosing the path of simple, raw and hateful black metal, incorporating death metallic touches as well as thrash alike guitar riffs.
If the music isn’t groundbreaking, the musical arrangements show many well done and catchy riffs and rhythmic diversity that should even please or catch the profane attention.
Even if CATACUMBA isn’t the fastest black metal band, they manage to remain aggressive and sometimes break the intensity with slower and atmospheric parts (without keyboards).
The tape ends with what I consider the best track of the demo: “Impure hate” in a total thrash metal warfare way reminding old stuff by KREATOR, DESTRUCTION or SLAYER, killer track indeed, shorter, more efficient, like a kick in posers’ balls.
