MARGINAL demo 2008 Review

MARGINAL (Fr) – S/T
Tape 2008 – Self released
7 tracks – 26’00
Rated: 6/10

This is the first demo of Paskiss (ZEBARGES) and Jeff (EMMOS, THE DEAD MUSICIAN, KITSCHO’MAGIC, JEFF …) who joined their forces to create thrash metal the old way. If some French bastards used to read underground zines they might know that Paskiss is complete thrash metal die-hard, and he probably dreamt of having his own band into that style one day. And here it is. Coming with a DIY production, this release is before all a matter of passion. Do you think I write this to hide a musical poverty? Not really. The fact MARGINAL plays some raw thrash metal with some punkish influences, that they probably use Miss drum-machine, don’t prevent this demo from having some ass-kicking moments! Just read the lyrics of “Thrash maniaque” to see their influences: SLAYER, KREATOR, DARK ANGEL (their early works of corpse) and I would add old METALLICA (Kill ‘em all) for some riffs.
This first release has some mistakes of course like the messy intro which I fear was occur shitty stuff and sometimes the music isn’t always tight, but I have heard worse demos.
The drum-programming is back mixed so that doesn’t sound too much synthetic and finally that’s ok (even though a real sweating drummer would be better).
Their “Flag of hate” cover is also ok in a rough version. Not bad for a first thrashing attempt but to make it clear, this kind of demo is for underground thrash metallers and not for crystal clear sound lovers. Deadly enough to drink and drive on the highway to hell.
