PLAGUE BEARER Rise of the goat Review

PLAGUE BEARER (US) – Rise of the goat
7”EP 2006 – Nuclear Winter Records
4 tracks
Rated: 7,5/10

Side project of members of DRAWN AND QUARTERED, this was enough for me to get a copy of “Rise of the goat”. In fact PLAGUE BEARER is a rather old project that was created in 1992 by Kelley Kuciemba (guitar). The band released four demos (alas I didn’t hear any of them) and was put on ice until Herb release these four tracks with the help of his comrades of DRAWN AND QUARTERED.
The result is awfully great, rather close to DRAWN AND QUARTERED tunes but in a more raw and bestial death metal way. Here you have satanic death metal, quite brutal but where the band is exceptional when they instigate a particular malignant aura with their creeping parts, very dark enforced by the rawness of the vinyl sound. If early IMMOLATION and early INCANTATION releases are obvious influences I would add a less known band which can be closer to PLAGUE BEARER which is the infamous IMPRECATION. The upsetting and gloomy atmospheres that both bands can create are just incredible.
Some may argue that’s just the same stuff with different names; that’s not totally wrong, but remember that the same musicians play in both bands. PLAGUE BEARER is much raw and is a bit more black/death metal oriented. A good rebirth, I hope some more stuff is coming soon.
