DEATHEVOKATION (US) – The chalice of ages
CD 2007 – Xtreem Music
9 tracks – 61’03
Rated: 6,5/10
Logical following of their “Blood” demo 2005, first released on tape this old way then released on a split CD with MANDATORY and KINGDOM. DEATHEVOKATION is also the clear vision of what old school (alte schüle!) death metal should/must be according to its leader Götz Vogelsang. The early and majestic beginning of the genre where it sounded dark, heavy, slow and memorable.
This first album is a monument not in the sense of a milestone but more in the sense of a huge record to listen. Almost an hour of death/doom metal rather melodic but dark at the same time.
If the old days of band such as PARADISE LOST, MORGOTH, WINTER, AMORPHIS, GRAVE, SENTENCED, GOREMENT and the likes provide any form of putrid interest to your ears, you certainly have to check this release of DEATHEVOKATION.
The album start with quite good song with catchy melodies, very long track maybe a bit too much. It reminds me “Lord of the storms” by VORE where the band made the same mistake with endless tracks. VORE corrected that mistake on the following release “Maleficus” which was more accomplished in terms of songwriting and went to the essential.
Many atmospheres are displayed all along “The chalice…” by the use of acoustic parts and short intro/outro between some tracks.
The general tempos are mostly mid-paced but DEATHEVOKATION doesn’t forbid any form of acceleration and even some short blast beats incursion in “Infinity blights the flesh”, but nevertheless the band quickly comes back to its slow decaying trademark death metal.
Far from the speed and technical contest of the actual death metal (or even extreme metal in general) trend, DEATHEVOKATION plays what they believe in: “music that doesn’t follow trends is meant for the ages”. Time will tell.
