EIBON / HANGMAN'S CHAIR split CD Review

EIBON (Fr) / HANGMAN’S CHAIR (Fr) – S/T
Split CD 2007 – Bones Brigade Records
4 tracks – 28’26
Rated: 6/10 – 7/10

Two tracks per band and two different styles of doom metal and probably two different roots. Dunno if the fact that many doom bands popped up from anywhere can be considered as a trend or whatever, probably this style has got more attention than before.
Anyway let’s talk about our main subject which is this split CD gathering two landmates bands: EIBON homing members of death metal band DROWNING offers two tracks of musically traditional doom metal in the vein of early CATHEDRAL and PENTAGRAM with particular screamed vocals that remind a bit what your can hear in black metal. Not that EIBON practises extreme doom, doom/death or funeral doom, this is just the vocals that can be considered as extreme as their tracks are dark, heavy and monolithic tunes in the vein of CROWBAR with a bit of groove to avoid to feel asleep. Well played but nothing astonishing compared to the pioneers of the genre.
HANGMAN’S CHAIR is somewhat different as they choose a more rockish doom metal orientation with clear vocals. If EIBON was more graveyard happiness oriented, HANGMAN’S CHAIR let emanates a narcotic atmosphere through their music. A bit if BLACK SABBATH members were jamming with the guys of DOWN. HANGMAN’S CHAIR borrows some sonorities of DOWN sometimes and even the smoky, slow decaying moments. Promising stuff.
