DOWNLORD (Den) – Random dictionary of the damned
CD 2007 – Open Grave Records
15 tracks – 40’53
Rated: 8/10
I had a good impression listening at their previous EP and this first album is a confirmation of DOWNLORD’s deadly potential. For the newcomers, DOWNLORD is a new Danish act that gathered Dave Ingram (ex-BOLT THROWER, ex-BENEDICTION) and various ex-members of INIQUITY. The style performed is a rather murderous death metal not far from INIQUITY maybe less technical and with a different approach of obscurity.
The band’s trademark remains into old school way of playing death metal with traditional elements without denying brutality which has an important room in DOWNLORD although this is not their only massive killing capacity. Where the band is undoubtedly competent is when they use and abuse of many short guitar leads, guitar breaks and solos (reminding again INIQUITY) making the listening quite captivating. Maybe one can reproach the absence of more slow parts all along the album but that’s a detail.
Dave Ingram’s vocals are the way they used to be if you know his job in BENEDICTION, quite monotonous without too many variations but they help to keep the intensity high.
To sum up I think fans of INIQUITY (Did I mention this band before?) are advised to check DOWNLORD as well as people into MONSTROSITY.
