DRAWN & QUARTERED Merciless hammer of lucifer Review

DRAWN AND QUARTERED (US) – Merciless hammer of Lucifer
CD 2007 – Moribund Records
9 tracks – 40’21
Rated: 8,5/10

Giving a following after a high-levelled album as “Hail infernal darkness” is not an easy task. This previous release definitively settled DAQ on the throne of unholy death metal.
To be honest the first listening of “Merciless…” were disappointing as “Hail…” left on me a good impression. However all typical elements from the previous releases are there: infernal guitar riffs, the impious lead guitars, the drums pounding assaults, the fire breathing vocals…
It took some times to fully enjoy it but “Merciless…” is in the direct vein of “Hail…”, that’s a fact. You get engulfed in a furnace of flaming guitar riffs. Probably influenced by IMMOLATION, therefore the use of many lead guitars reminds some MORBID ANGEL (Erik Rutan’s way of playing” on “Domination” and “Gateways…”. These are influences for sure and DAQ manages to sound personal at the end.
A rather brutal album but DAQ is impressive at displaying sinister and soul possessing dark atmospheres that obviously shall please fans of the bands mentioned above. One of the best actual death metal outfits from the US far from the bla-blasting competitors.
