Prayer Book Zine #3 review

PRAYER BOOK ‘Zine #3 (Italia)
2007
40 pages A4 – English written

I am quite impressed by this publication: pure underground fanzine made in the cut n’ paste way and coming fully in glossy paper. The editors Francesca and Stefano are attached to the traditional underground with snail mail and fiercely attack the actual so-called underground wannabes and the internet abuses. Maybe these are rude statements but they are not completely wrong. But let’s come back to their work which shows an impressive amount of work. In Prayer Book you can read about different musical styles, mostly old school be it grind, death, black, doom, thrash or heavy metal. To give you an idea, you can read interviews with WYTCHKRAFT, NOCTURNAL VOMIT, FUNERUS, VARATHRON, DRILLER KILLER, DECEASED (yeah!), XIBALBA, WEAPON, KRATORNAS (I wonder if there is a zine where this guy hasn’t appeared?), SCURVY, PAGAN RITES, etc… That shows a will of diversity and usually the chat go to the essential about the bands depending on the motivation of the featured guys who can behave disappointingly like PAGAN RITES. The inties aren’t especially long but I am quite satisfied even if sometimes I would have expected a bit more from bands which are completely unknown to me like MINOTAURI for example.
Here and there you can also read reviews about demos, LP, EP, CD and zines from a wide panel of ultra underground bands. My main reproaches concern their length and the fact that the newcomer can hardly understand what we are talking about if he doesn’t have enough metallic knowledge. For die-hards, a poster of AUTOPSY and VOIVOD comes with the zine.
A good ‘zine with a pure underground state of mind: recommended! Get in touch as Stefano also heads a small label Terror from Hell Records.
