THE SEVEN GATES - OFFENDING - ARTERY in La Couronne April 3th 2010

THE SEVEN GATES – OFFENDING – ARTERY
CSC Théatre de La Couronne (16 -France)
3rd April 2010

Metal gigs being as rare in my area as a single hair on the head of Jesus the Butcher, I was almost forced to find a drinking buddy to come together and support some cool bands.

From ARTERY I knew the demo 2006 I reviewed back then, that was some not so bad heavy/thrash, so that was the time to watch how the band evolved and that was the reason for OFFENDING and THE SEVEN GATES to come and play out there as ARTERY was part of the organization.
ARTERY if without being of absolute originality, was cool to listen again. The band is still rooted in thrash metal, and reminded me a kinda cool mix of DESTRUCTION and CORONER. The sound wasn't the best, especially the singing which was mixed backward, but that was worth the witness, especially the right guitar player who displayed some great guitar solos, with an easiness that would make me throw my guitar away...
Sadly, as the gig's beginning was planned at 8 p.m, the guys started after 9 p.m but we were hardly reached the 20 people, with ages from 7/8 years old (the musicians' kids I guess) to 50 or so.
But the beer was cool enough and the band were motivated...

OFFENDING followed but with not more people. Their first album is still not out but will be released by Deepsend Records as soon as the artwork is done. Loïc is no more part of OFFENDING and is replaced by Cyriex (ASMODEE, ex-SETH...), a mercenary that learn tracks quickly and played decently as well.
This was a brutal slap in the face, OFFENDING's brutal death is highly inspired by the US scene, and Jesus (the singer) is reminding me Glen Benton with his guttural vocals coupled with screams, a bit linear though, not a fan of the guy but good job anyway. The way he tries to ask the people to move their asses is useless, especially when the crowd is very few. A good show, with some tracks from the 2nd demo and probably many from the album.
The band is still working on their 2nd album more influenced by the 90's death metal told me the drummer, can't wait to hear that!

Let's open the gates for...THE SEVEN GATES, ah! Crappy jokes apart, I didn't pay much attention to THE SEVEN GATES, I just heard a track from the demo some time ago but nothing to catch my attention. The fact that the band is owning an ex-member of MUTILATED and ABYSSALS should have awaken more interest, how stupid I was...to finally to listen to THE SEVEN GATES live!
Dudes, I was blown away by Michel Dumas' guitar playing! This guy in undoubtedly influenced by early stuff of MORBID ANGEL (from “Abomination...” to “Covenant”), with thrashy influences like POSSESSED, maybe 90's US death metal minions like MONSTROSITY, EULOGY, IMMOLATION, NECROSIS, PESSIMIST but MORBID ANGEL for sure! He completely assimilates the MORBID style to finally create his own tunes. Less than an hour of death metal maelstrom, with evil sounding riffing, incredible solos, Michel completely disgusted with his ease of playing. THE SEVEN GATES doesn't play on complete brutality but is more into insidious and dark atmospheres, catchy and headbanging tunes. The fact we were just 20 miserable souls can seem a terrible loss of time, I consider this more as a privilege.

A killer gig with very cool and talkative musicians, alas very few people but was it due to a lack of promotion? People laziness? Maybe both. They are very few real metal dates in here and there won't be anymore with such a lazy fuck attitude.
