S:T ERIK demo 2007 review

S:T ERIK (Swe) – Upsala
Demo CD 2007 – Self released
3 tracks – 15’23
Rated: 8/10

I am utterly impressed by this first demo of S:T ERIK, be it in terms of musicianship or simply by its sound. This is a really professional material and no doubt that the band will get a deal with this.
S:T ERIK is a pure doom metal band which gathered ex-members of DOUGLAS FIR and the incredible DEVIANT (yes the brutal death band from Sweden).
Despite the fact that S:T ERIK started as a pals projects hailing beer and stuff like BLACK SABBATH, ST VITUS, PENTAGRAM, REVEREND BIZARRE and shits like that, the guys are very cunning musicians with a large panel of playing abilities.
The tracks simply stick to your mind and have their own soul displaying a fascinating coldness. One can feel some resigned despair listening to “Upsala” demo but we’re far from cutting one’s own veins; I mean it’s not suicidal black metal. The two first tracks are in the pure doom metal tradition with a rock structure (chorus and guitar solos), pretty entertaining. The last track is quite different, as it’s based on quicker rhythms, more powerful riffs and a more extreme vocal way that may be closer to stuff like EYEHATEGOD or CROWBAR but without the “core” touch if you see what I mean.
A good beginning, I am quite eager to listen to more stuff and see how the band will evolve.
