MISGIVINGS demo 2006 review

MISGIVINGS (Fr) – Masquerading as god
Demo CD 2006 – Self released
4 tracks – 12’09
Rated: 6/10
Yet another French combo coming up with a will to spread death metal; then some may argue the French scene doesn’t exist, maybe if they would move a bit their fat ass and look forward they would be quite surprised. Anyway let’s go back to MISGIVINGS.
The band is certainly not the band of the moment but their evil death metal has undoubtedly some qualities…as well as defaults!
This second demo offers some raw yet satanic death metal in the vein of 90’s death metal. Early MORBID ANGEL, AMON/early DEICIDE, MONSTROSITY and early IMMOLATION are the main influences I guess.
The tracks are rather short and go right to the point, a bit like the early songs of DEICIDE, although MISGIVINGS’ guitar sound is less sharpened and that’s probably my main reproach: it’s too muffled. The kick drum as well isn’t great: too thin and sounding like an awful click.
Beside this MISGIVINGS manages to create an evil atmosphere within the tracks maybe helped by the average production but also by their good riffs and well done melodies, and the low guttural voice of their bass player, really aggressive.
The last track is a live one; at least I like it better than the previous tracks as it seems the band crushes on stage. Quite a promising band.
