ALIOTH demo 2007 review

ALIOTH (US) – Channeling unclean spirits
Tape 2007 – Starlight Temple Society
6 tracks – 14’
Rated: 5/10
One man band project of Wargoat Obscurum (CULT OF DAATH), ALIOTH is fortunately not a raw black metal release but more some mid paced occult old school death metal. The speed here doesn’t really exist as ALIOTH plays more doom/death oriented metal. The stuff was recorded in 2002 so I wonder what did the guy do during five years (paying his bills probably, Satan is still not a valuable action). This first demo “Channeling…” surprises by his lack of brutality and is more oriented to create dark atmospheres. In fact we have only 3 tracks, each one coming with a short instrumental intro.
The music itself is quite minimalist as well as the drums which are real drums, a good point.
Listening to “Channeling…” you probably can think of acts such as DIVINE EVE or ACHERON with a touch of DEATH “Leprosy” for some riffs though ALIOTH doesn’t reach the bloody potential of the bands mentioned, even if ALIOTH aims to instigate some really gloomy atmospheres especially on the second track.
A more punchy production would help the band going further in the abyss but that’s a first demo so ALIOTH is expected to do better. I just hope we won’t wait 5 more years.
