Fourth edition of this small zine done the cut n’ paste way where humour and politically uncorrect is the king. The whole zine is well written with a kind of fuck-off attitude and when something sucks it is written, no more, no less.
The editors have a personal view of underground metal which is transcribed in their review choices (mostly black, thrash and derived, and with the old school feeling please) as well as the bands featured which are mostly rare interviewed bands or at least unusual ones: Legion of Death Records (probably the best intie with Shaxul that even jokes!), SPEAR OF LONGINUS (very long and boring, I think I didn’t reach the end because I fell asleep before), NOKTURNAL MORTUM, INVOKER, LION’S PRIDE (side project of Gunther of ANCIENT RITES) and an old chat from 1992 of MASTER’S HAMMER.
The interviews are well done and avoid the basic questions, the guys are really competent in digging the deepest graves and the result is enjoyable although the bands featured aren’t of my tastes. The reviews (zines, CD, LP, EP, etc…) follow the same scheme even if the guys review mostly things they like (or that seems interesting according to them) the rest is unmercifully executed.
Another particularity of SENTINELLE Zine is their infatuation for Howard’s Conan the Barbarian books (a bit like the guy of Vicomte de Neurasthénie Zine with Atari, but I guess they wouldn’t appreciate the comparison, ahahah!) with an article about a third chapter Conan the conqueror on DVD.
The whole zine’s tone is a mix of black humour with a vile pleasure to dance on the tendentious edge, a thing very personal to this zine. I think that won’t please all our internet warriors but they have certainly better things to do than buying fanzines.
