DEVIANT Apathyphus Review

DEVIANT (Swe) – Apathyphus
3”CD 2007 – Nuclear Winter Records
4 tracks – 11’19
Rated: 7/10

Probably the last release (until a reunion?) of DEVIANT as the guys parted ways due to different musical interests, so it’s quite sad because their first and only album “Larvaeon” was a real drilling rocket in the ass: fine brutal death metal of the Swedish new school maybe easier to appreciate than their landmates of VISCERAL BLEDDING, SPAWN OF POSSESSION and co.
Firstly, the release format is a quite weird choice (a 3”CD) with a small artwork (smaller than a CD) and even if it’s original I don’t like it very much as I can’t play it in every stereos, fuck it! A 7”EP would have been a more judicious choice.
Anyway, musically, DEVIANT is still playing their trademark of modern brutal death metal that keeps that small embryo of melody. The blasting parts are still in the CRYPTOPSY vein, ferocious ones and sometimes DEVIANT sounds close to grindcore àla NASUM or ROTTEN SOUND. Maybe less melodic than before DEVIANT fortunately isn’t playing brutal shit for the sake of brutality. Fans of the previous releases would be pleased with those four tracks (as well as a NASUM cover “Inhale/Exhale”
