DEVIANT SURGEONS demo 2006 review

DEVIANT SURGEONS (Fr) – Symptoms of carnage
Demo CD 2006 – Self released
4 tracks – 16’05
Rated: 7/10

These four tracks should have been released as a split with RECTAL COLLAPSE from Brazil, but it seems it never happened for unknown reasons so it is released as a demo, the second one by DEVIANT SURGEONS after a promising first one suffering from a mediocre sound, quite chaotic, nevertheless some potential was detected by my putrefactive investigation. This new demo, with a nice pathologic lay-out, shows some improvement in the sound, rather powerful and clear (but not too much) where everything is understandable.
This said, musically DEVIANT SURGEONS kept playing the brutal death metal from their first demo, with rhythmic diversity but still having this heaviness characteristic reminding ROTTREVORE with their low tuned guitars and low guttural growls. The band also has the pathologic vibe you can hear on the “Necroticism…” from the almighty CARCASS, I mean this old smell of morgue that has just been cleaned but where the smell of death remains, especially the first track, “The hunter”.
DEVIANT SURGEONS surely focus on increasing a macabre mood in their music instead on looking for just useless brutality for the sake of it, adding simple but efficient solos enforcing the sombreness. Sometimes they remind me a bit what PUTREFIED plays, this particular down-tuned death metal from the US.
