VAKARM World of chaos Review

VAKARM (Fr) – World of chaos
CD 2006 – Great Dane Records
9 tracks – 30’08
Rated: 5,5/10

First album of this French band, I don’t think they ever release anything before, maybe a confidential demo. The band has really underground promotion, which means that except in In Extremis Newsletter, I don’t see much adverts. That’s certainly the typical French attitude: is it a lack of self confidence or ambition, a will of regional elitism, or whatever, I will never understand! The same you can apply in terms of interviews where they don’t want or cannot answer questions asked in English (I don’t talk exclusively about VAKARM but French bands in general); what the fuck were you doing during the English lessons ;))
About VAKARM we can musically say that they have some good ideas with their quite cool death metal. Completely in the US 90’s vein of old school brutal death metal, with many influences from old HYPOCRISY, CANNIBAL CORPSE, SUFFOCATION and MALEVOLENT CREATION, they don’t fall in the trap of cheap deathcore. The guys use traditional death metal weapons, although sometimes too common and still heard “Parabellum”, or manage to create good structures with entertaining tunes like “Brainshake” or “Vicious trouble” for example.
Concerning the production, well it’s mostly good except, according to me, the drum sound which could have benefit from a better job: it sounds too much rehearsal-like for an album.
Not a bad release but nothing groundbreaking though.
